Chances are you have never heard of the Fläming Skate. Even if you are an inline skater.
Yet the network of paved trails in the Brandenburg region south of Berlin is well known by German skaters as being the premier long-distance inline skating location in the country. And from my point of view as a skate tour organizer with 27 years of experience running tours, this is probably the premier skate tour location in the world.
The Fläming Skate (often written Flaeming Skate) is composed of 230 kilometers of paved trails in eight different connected and overlapping loops, plus eight additional one-way paved paths that intersect with the network. It is a network of paths unlike anywhere else we know of.
But what makes the Fläming Skate region even more unique is that the local authorities have specifically created this network of trails for inline skaters. The pavement quality is superb and the local governments continually upkeep the trail so it remains that way – heaven for skaters. We know of nowhere else in the world where trails of this length are paved with inline skaters in mind.
I don’t know why the local authorities chose to make this a skating network. It was probably a scheme to put the Brandenburg region on the map for active tourism. And I don’t know why the Fläming Skate network is so unknown outside of Germany and, indeed, outside of Europe. It is possibly because the network is in a rural region not really known for its tourism, despite being close to Berlin.
But it doesn’t matter to us why this network of skating-specific trails was created. Once I found out about the region, I went there, skated the trails, and established a new Fläming Skate: Inline Skating & Biking Adventure. I saw more inline skaters in three days than I have seen in the past three years (outside of the North Shore Inline Marathon) and yet still had miles of trails all to myself. Take it from the guy who created the world’s first inline skating tour company – if your main goal is to find nice skating paths, this is it.
