We know of only two places in the world with designated inline skating paths: Switzerland and the Flaeming Skate (Fläming Skate) region in Brandenburg, Germany, south of Berlin. Switzerland has made the effort to identify bike paths that are also good for skating, but the Flaeming Skate region actually created and resurfaces its paths to be ideal for inline skaters. What does this mean? 230 kilometers (143 miles) of primarily 10-foot wide, car-free, mostly-flat paths featuring pristine pavement in a series of eight connected loops. There is simply nothing like this for inline skaters and recreational cyclists anywhere else in the world.

Flaeming Skate and Bike Tour
We use these paths to create a seven-day tour in which most of our skaters and bikers will never need a shuttle. You will skate from hotel to hotel or do loops starting and ending at the hotel (with two nights each in three hotels). Each day we will have a standard route that ranges from 15 to 30 miles. We will also have shorter options that include a van shuttle and longer options that can give you around 40 miles in a day. The routes are mostly flat, thanks to the scouring of glaciers in this area during the last ice age.

Bikers will find the routes equally pleasing, since those attributes important to skaters – flat, car-free, and nicely paved paths – are just as important to bikers. We often find that our skaters will bring a biker along with them on our skating and biking tours. And if you are a skater but not sure you want to skate every day, on this tour you can rent a bike and bring your skates, as long as you bike on days two, four, and six when we go from hotel to hotel.
Your Guide
Allan is Zephyr’s owner and founder and has been running adventure vacations around the world since 1997. Allan is a native of Seattle and has lived in eleven cities in four countries on three continents. His visit list is up to 66 countries – as of this writing!
Flaeming Towns and Culture
The Brandenburg area south of Berlin is fairly rural with small cities and even smaller villages dotting the skating and biking routes. Because of the popularity of the paths among German skaters and bikers, beer gardens, restaurants, and cafes have popped up to meet the needs of the active travelers in the area. Some days we’ll find options for snacks, lunch, and perhaps a quenching beer; other days we’ll start early and skate into the next city for lunch there.
Our adventure includes overnights in three small cities in the area: Luckenwalde (we actually stay just outside in the village of Kolzenburg), Jüterbog, and Dahme/Mark. Each has historic centers with shops and restaurants. But one of the things we love the most about this area? There are hardly any tourists here and those that come are generally from within Germany. It is the perfect location for experiencing what real Germany is like.
North Shore and Berlin Inline Marathons
The North Shore Inline Marathon in 2026 is scheduled for Saturday, September 19th. So if you are training for and skating the marathon, you will be in prime condition for doing a seven-day skate tour shortly after.
The Berlin Inline Marathon in 2026 is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, September 26th. So if you are interested to skate one of the most famous marathons in the world, you can do so just prior to the tour. Please keep in mind the marathon has a two-hour cutoff, so you need to be a fairly good skater.
This is truly an amazing area with outstanding skating and biking. Granted, there are always a few places in towns where we have to skate on tiles and a few small hills that will leave you out of breath. Such is the reality of a seven-day skating or biking vacation. But the network of flat, car-free, wide, well-surfaced asphalt trails makes this truly one of the best skate tour locations in the world.

The daily routes are not short, with 20 to 30 miles from hotel to hotel. For skaters, this can be challenging. However, the routes are smooth and mostly flat and we do have a van support available. E-bikes are not available.

DAY 1 > Meet in Luckenwalde, Germany
We meet after lunch at our hotel in the village of Kolzenburg outside the small city of Luckenwalde. The village is only a short shuttle from the train station, which is an easy 45-minute train ride from Berlin. After introductions and a tour overview, those of you biking will get acquainted with your rental bikes. We will then depart - right from the front door of our hotel - on an initial 15-mile loop ride or skate. The route uses a portion of the official Flaeming Skate path as well as connected bike paths that take us through the city of Lueckenwalde before completing the loop back to our hotel. Dinner tonight is in the hotel restaurant, which also has an outdoor beer garden. Biking or Skating Distance: 15 Miles
DAYS 2 & 3 > Dahme/Mark, Germany
We skate or bike from our hotel in Kolzenburg across the Brandenburg countryside. Most of the paths are away from roads, through fields and forests. We pass through several small villages, including Jänickendorf, Holbeck, Liessen, and Wahlsdorf. Our goal for the end of Day Two is the small city of Dahme/Mark, which is known both for its nature and its history. Near to the city is a huge nature preserve, inhabited since the Stone Age, with hiking trails. The ruins of a Baroque castle are situated right across from our hotel. The following day we do a loop ride or skate, starting and ending right out the door of our hotel. We'll do a guided walking tour of Dahme/Mark and learn about the history of the city from the 1600s up through recent (East German) times. We enjoy a traditional German dinner one night and a fantastic Greek dinner in the hotel restaurant the other night. Biking or Skating Distances: 28 or 48 miles (Day 2) and 20 or 32 miles (Day 3)
DAYS 4&5 > Jüterbog, Germany
We continue on the major loop of the Flaeming Skate routes, traveling from Dahme/Mark on to the town of Jüterbog. Along the way, we'll again cross through open fields and forested lands. There are a number of small villages on the route, one of which has several excellent lunch options at local beer halls. On Day Four we'll do a lollypop loop, skating or biking to what is called the RK3 (Rundkurs 3), an incredibly smooth seven-mile loop that you can circle as many times as you want. The loop is centered around a local inline skating outdoor arena, considered one of the finest in Germany, that attracts speed skating teams from all over the country and farther afield. With luck, we'll be able to skate on the course ourselves and pretend for a moment we are world-class racers. Jüterbog itself is a cute small city with an historic past and a fun central plaza. We'll do a walking tour of the city to learn about its Renaissance and military past, as it was a base for both the Prussian army and, later, troops from the Soviet Union. In Jüterbog we stay in a small hotel where we'll participate in a game of kegelbahn (German-style bowling) prior to dinner. The other night we'll eat in a tent on the main square as part of the local Oktoberfest celebrations. Biking or Skating Distances: 30 or 42 miles (Day 4) and 17 miles with extra loops possible (Day 5)
DAYS 6 & 7 > Back to Luckenwalde
On Day Six we skate from from Jüterbog on a new loop through the countryside back to our starting hotel near Luckenwalde. We usually stop at a small country inn and restaurant for lunch along the way. This is perhaps the best skating of the week as the trails are almost all perfectly paved. Arriving to our hotel, we'll have time to shower up, meet in the biergarden, and have a final farewell dinner in town (Italian food). The following day, we have an early morning loop route of excellent quality before shuttling to the nearby train station so you can catch a train back to Berlin or wherever your travels take you. Biking or Skating Distances: 20 or 25 miles (Day 6) and 7.5 or 15 miles (Day 7)
Trip Accommodations
We stay in three separate hotels on this Adventure. Please be aware there are no luxury hotels in this region of Germany. The hotels we use are comfortable and clean but simple three-star hotels. Plus, they all have lots of character!
NIGHTS 1 & 6 >> HOTEL ZUM EICHENKRANZ / KOLZENBURG, GERMANY
The Hotel Zum Eichenkranz is located right on the Flaeming Skate paths and has been in the hands of one family for 200 years. The current owner, Uwe Kuhlmey, grew up skating and has positioned the hotel to be one of the main bases for inline skaters coming to the area from out of town. Uwe also is a well-known chef, with his specialties being Bauernstullen ("Farmer's Sandwiches") and Schaschlik (grilled skewers of meat). The restaurant is complemented by a 100-seat beer garden which serves as a meeting point for skaters and bikers on the Flaeming Skate trails.
NIGHTS 2 & 3 >> HOTEL AM SCHLOSSPARK / DAHME/MARK, GERMANY
Our hotel is located right across the street from the ruins of an ancient castle. ("Am Schlosspark" means "on the park with the castle".) The small town of Dahme/Mark has several historic buildings and a number of shops and cafes, all of which are within a short walk of the hotel. The highly-rated Greek restaurant Rhodos Blue is located on site and we'll eat there one night.
NIGHTS 4 & 5 >> BETT & BIKE HOTEL FUCHSBAU / JöTERBOG, GERMANY
The Fuchsbau is another three-star hotel that is located right on one of the subsidiary paths connecting to the Flaeming Skate. This means we can once again skate and bike right up to the front doors or the hotel. Located a short 10-minute walk to the center of Jöterbog, you can easily take your free time to wander the streets of this historic city. The breakfast is excellent and the restaurant highly rated. Plus, we'll play a few games of "kegelbahn", German-style bowling, in the alley in the hotel!

Our arrival and departure are both at our hotel in Kolzenburg near Luchenwalde, a short distance south of Berlin. You can easily fly into Berlin, a major airport, and make the 45-minute ride by train south. We will provide shuttles from the train station to our hotel if you arrive on the first morning and back to the station on the final day.
What's Included?
- One Zephyr guide will accompany each trip and a second is added as necessary.
- Our trip prices are based on double occupancy. If you are coming on a trip solo, you have two options: 1) Pay the single supplement to receive your own room. 2) Ask us to try to find you a roommate of the same gender to share a room with; if we are not successful, you will be charged the single supplement and receive your own room.
- All of your dinners and breakfasts are included. Gratuity for these meals is also included. In general, we leave lunches open so that you have time to explore and enjoy the local flavors en route.
- All your transportation is included once you meet your guides on the first day. We have a support van with us on the tour.
- NOT INCLUDED Bike rental, beverages, desserts, lunches, gratuities to your guides, personal expenses and travel to and from the destination.
Weather
This region of Europe has historically had pleasant temperatures from May through September. However, be aware recent years have produced heat waves in the summer months and that it can rain all year round in the region. The fall should be good weather for outdoor exercise with hopefully dry skies and cool evenings.
Extending Your Stay
We highly suggest spending a couple of nights in Berlin. If you spend these nights prior to the tour, you will adjust to the local time zone. If you spend them after the tour, you might meet others on the trip with whom you can hang out. If you are interested and can break the two-hour barrier, you can skate the famous Berlin Inline Skating Marathon on the Saturday prior to the tour that gets thousands of other skaters. Berlin is also within easy train distance of major eastern European cities such as Warsaw and Prague.
Changes to Your Itinerary
While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience. If there is any one experience that is going to make or break your trip, please discuss this with us in advance! We will attempt to keep our website itinerary as current as possible and communicate any major changes with you in the weeks prior to the tour.
