I will admit when our long-time traveler Heather from Minnesota told me she wanted us to create a hiking tour in Liechtenstein I had no idea what about the country was appealing to her. I knew of Liechtenstein as a tiny, landlocked European country and had even been there decades before. But I had never heard of the Liechtenstein Trail. Now I know.
The Liechtenstein Trail
The Liechtenstein Trail is a 75 -kilometer hiking trail that runs through Liechtenstein. It crosses all 11 municipalities of the country and wanders through fields, across large plains next to the Rhone River, and into the foothills of the Alps. Liechtenstein is mountainous but not nearly so much as its two neighbors, Austria and Switzerland. The Liechtenstein Trail is a moderate hike – more of a country ramble in many places – that becomes more difficult for those choosing to hike it from one end to the other.
The Liechtenstein Trail was created by the country’s government only in 2019, making it one of the newest long-distance trails in the world. Locals and tourists are only just now discovering it and deciding to put this adventure on their To Do list.
Our Inn-to-Inn Hiking Adventure
The Liechtenstein Trail has five different stages and most travelers take five days to complete it. Because the trail stays away from the high mountains, there are plenty of services en route in the towns spaced out along the trail. Our tour takes us from hotel-to-hotel along the route, we eat dinners in local restaurants, have lunch stops along the way, and enjoy a variety of cultural activities such as touring a winery and visiting a ruined castle.
We have also adapted (and we think improved) our route from the typical Liechtenstein Trail hike. With an alteration at the beginning and end of our tour, we are able to start in Maienfeld, Switzerland and end in Feldkirch, Austria. Not only does this allow you to walk across Liechtenstein from border to border but it also provides us with excellent transportation options via train to Zurich and other major cities. The result is a beautiful inn-to-inn, cross-country six-day tour.
Heather – that Zephyr alumni who alerted me to Liechtenstein as a tour destination – has been all over the world and spends a lot of time researching new travel ideas. When she tells me she wants us to create a new tour, I pay attention. And we love that she trusts us enough to ask us to do so. Heather, our new Liechtenstein Hiking Inn-to-Inn Adventure is for you!
