Liechtenstein Hiking Inn-to-Inn Adventure

July 29 - August 3, 2026 $3,500 Inn-to-Inn Hiking

“Liechtenstein is pure fairy-tale stuff – a mountain principality
governed by an iron-willed monarch, embedded deep in the Alps and crowned by turreted castles.

Lonely planet

Liechtenstein may be small, but it offers a surprisingly rich and varied landscape. Set along the Rhine and framed by green valleys and rugged Alpine hills, the country feels both scenic and approachable—dramatic enough to inspire, yet gentle enough to enjoy at a relaxed pace.

Hiking here is refreshingly moderate compared to neighboring Switzerland and Austria—he highest point is only 8,527 feet. Over six days, you’ll travel on foot from inn to inn, moving through open valleys, over rolling hills, and into charming villages where daily life still unfolds at a local scale. Each day blends movement with discovery, giving you time to appreciate the scenery, the culture, and the quiet rhythm of the trail.

Perhaps the most unexpected joy is the sense of space. Liechtenstein remains largely undiscovered by hikers, so the trails often feel wonderfully uncrowded. It’s the kind of place where you can walk for hours with little company beyond mountain views, village church bells, and the satisfaction of exploring a beautiful country that most travelers never truly experience.

We think you’ll be surprised at how much there is to discover here; a fairytale land with exciting stories, impressive sites, magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, and diverse cuisine and beverages, influenced by the nearby countries.

About Liechtenstein Hiking

Imagine crossing an entire country on foot—following a single, beautifully designed trail from one border to the other. The Liechtenstein Trail does exactly that, weaving 75 kilometers through all 11 municipalities of this tiny Alpine principality.

Created only recently, the trail remains largely undiscovered, offering a rare chance to experience Liechtenstein in a way few travelers ever will. Each day brings a new village, a new landscape, and a deeper sense of how this small country fits together.

We make the experience even more special by beginning in Switzerland and finishing in Austria, allowing you to hike seamlessly across Liechtenstein from border to border. It’s a journey that feels both intimate and epic—connecting three countries, countless mountain views, and a place most people only know by name.

We hike between 9 and 15 kilometers (6 and 10 miles) each day, which for six days in a row is enough challenge for the majority of people but not too much that you cannot enjoy and complete the routes. The elevation gain each day varies from 250 to 700 meters (800 to 2,300 feet), meaning most days are moderate but we do have some steep hills to contend with and get your heart pumping. The hiking takes place on forested trails, paths through open valleys, and country roads.

Each day we shuttle your luggage forward to the next hotel so you only have to carry a day pack and you can easily jump on a bus to shorten any day’s route. Each evening we stay in high-quality, very-local hotels and eat nice meals that feature dishes from both Liechtenstein and abroad. The key to this sort of hiking is that you have plenty of time to take photos, talk with the locals (many people speak English), learn from our professional local hiking guide Kathi, explore small towns, and stop for lunch.

Your Guide

Kathi Link is a certified mountain guide in Liechtenstein and the neighboring countries of Switzerland and Austria. She was born and raised in the country, has a certification in herbal nature as well as guiding, and loves to talk about her country’s flora, fauna, history, and culture.

Kathi was an amazing ambassador of her country”. ~ Colleen S.

“Kathi was great, fun and engaging, what we’ve come to expect from Zephyr guides”. ~ Melissa & Adam S.

Liechtenstein Culture

Liechtenstein’s culture is heavily influenced by its only two bordering countries: Switzerland and Austria (making it double-landlocked!) Hiking in Liechtenstein feels like stepping into a quieter, more intimate version of Alpine life. This tiny principality moves at a human pace—where mountain villages are close-knit, traditions are proudly preserved, and visitors are welcomed with genuine warmth rather than tourist polish.

As you walk through the countryside, you’ll experience a culture shaped by its Alpine setting and its Swiss and Austrian neighbors: efficient yet relaxed, refined yet deeply rooted in the land. Locals take pride in their trails, their communities, and their way of life, and that care is evident everywhere—from well-maintained paths to friendly greetings along the way.

Liechtenstein’s small size (62 square miles) makes the experience feel personal. You’re not one traveler among thousands; you’re a guest passing through a place that still feels wonderfully undiscovered. The result is a hiking experience that’s not just scenic, but quietly meaningful—where culture, landscape, and daily life are woven together in a way that invites you to slow down and truly be present.

This was a fantastic location with hiking, castles, museums, legendary stories, beautiful scenery and quaint villages!” Heather C.

DAY 1: BAD RAGAZ, SWITZERLAND > BALZERS, LIECHTENSTEIN

We meet in the mid-morning in the small village of Bad Ragaz in Switzerland for introductions and an overview of our tour. Bad Ragaz is easily reachable via train from Zurich in just over an hour. Our walk with the first highlight only two kilometers in: Heididorf, the actual village where Johanna Spyri wrote the book Heidi. The walk continues on a long, gradual uphill for another 2.5 kilometers and then is downhill to our destination of Balzers. Because our hotel in Balzers permanently closed, we will shuttle to the next town of Triesen and back the next morning, allowing us to spend two nights in one hotel.  Hiking Distance: 13.5 Kilometers (8.4 Miles)

DAY 2: BALZERS > TRIESEN

After breakfast we shuttle back to Balzers to begin our hike to Triesen. We start with a steep but short incline up to and down from the Gutenberg Castle. The castle is still intact, and we can wander into the courtyard; its first recorded mention is from the year 1296. The walk then continues along what is an old Roman road and stays mostly flat with a few ups and downs. Lunch is on your own in the town of Triesen, from where you can catch a bus to shorten the walk. After lunch, the hike continues uphill to St Mamerten Chapel, an excellent place to stop and admire the view. After time for a shower and a short rest, we'll have two treats for you. First, we will have an optional guided tour of the Walser Museum, featuring local customs and traditional village life of the Walser people, from the Wallis (or Valais) region. Then we will do a private tasting of Wicca spirits made from local herbs. Dinner tonight is a short walk away at a local restaurant.  Hiking Distance: 15.4 Kilometers (9.6 Miles)

DAY 3: TRIESEN > VADUZ

Today is a shorter hike because we end in the capital city of Vaduz, which is a great place to enjoy some free time. Our route starts by leading us past a glacial erratic - a large boulder deposited here in the last ice age - and uphill to the village of Prufatscheng, which has excellent views over the valley. We then head downhill, sharply at times, past the ruins of Schalun Castle, perched above the city of Vaduz. We'll then pass the still-inhabited Vaduz Castle and continue on into the town center. You can choose to add an extra three kilometers by walking down to the Rhine River and the pedestrian bridge Alte Rheinbrücke and back. We'll also take a walk to the Hofkellerei Liechtenstein, the winery owned by the royal family, for a tasting. Dinner tonight is at another local restaurant. Hiking Distance: 8.5 or 11.5 Kilometers (5.3 or 7.1 miles)

DAY 4: VADUZ > NENDELN

Today we pass through two small towns. The first hiking stage takes us about five kilometers past the University of Liechtenstein and into the village of Schaan, which is known for its ruins of an old Roman fort. The town of Schaan, with its population of under 5,000 people, has half a dozen restaurants and is a good spot to stop for lunch. You can also shorten today's route by catching a bus to Schaan (cutting off 4.9 kilomters) or a bus from here to our hotel in Nendeln (cutting off 7.6 kilometers). After lunch, we continue on our hike, mostly uphill to the St Elisabeth nunnery and then continuing uphill Planken, Liechtenstein's smallest municipality with a population of 473. Planken has a beautiful view of the valley below and the Three Sisters mountains above. We then drop sharply downhill on a mountain path into the town of Nendlen, which has both an ancient Roman estate and a ceramics factory you can visit. Hiking Distance: 12.5 Kilometers (7.8 Miles) with shorter options available

DAY 5: NENDELN > FELDKIRCH

Today we hike from Nendeln in Liechtenstein to Feldkirch in Austria. Our route starts out flat and then takes us sharply uphill to Schellenberg, which is famous for its Obere Berg, a ruined castle that is kept well preserved and which we can visit. We then head downhill and across a flat stretch into the city of Feldkirch, which is a fantastic small city on a river with a classic central historical core. The entire walk is 11 kilometers and we plan this day to start early so you can end up for lunch on your own in Feldkirch. In the afternoon you can visit the Schattenburg Castle & Museum or the SchokoMus chocolatier and patteserie. Those wishing to shorten the route can start with a bus to Schellenberg. Dinner tonight is at the nearby Wirtschaft zum Schutzenhaus, a delicious restaurant with an outdoor dining area serving Austrian cuisine.  Hiking Distance: 11 Kilometers or 6.8 Miles

DAY 6: FELDKIRCH LOOP

On our final morning, we'll enjoy an Austrian breakfast in the hotel and then depart on a short Stadtschrofen Feldkirchen loop hike. This takes us past the old town, across a river, through a forest and up to a viewpoint above town. We'll complete the loop via a different route back to our hotel. You'll have time to shower before checking out. It is then on to our separate ways. Feldkirch has excellent train connections, including a one hour and 40 minute trip back to Zurich if you are heading there.  Hiking Distance: 4 Kilometers (2.5 Miles)

Perched high above the Rhine Valley, it offers the perfect peaceful retreat after a day of exploring Liechtenstein. Arrival & Departure

Our main arrival and depart airport is Zurich. We start on Day One at 10:30 AM in the small town of Bad Ragaz in Switzerland. The town is easily reachable by train from Zurich and so you can stay in Zurich the night before and take a train in the morning. If you want to stay locally, Bad Ragaz has a few hotels and the original Heidi village but not much else.

Our departure is from Feldkirch, Austria. Again, Feldkirch has excellent train connections to Zurich. You likely will not be able to fly back to North America on the final day of the tour unless you depart early and skip the morning walk.

What's Included?
  • One Zephyr guide or local guide will accompany each trip, and a second is added as necessary.
  • Our trip prices are based on double occupancy. If you are coming on a trip solo, you have two options: 1) Pay the single supplement to receive your own room. 2) Ask us to try to find you a roommate of the same gender to share a room with; if we are not successful you will be charged the single supplement and receive your own room.
  • All of your dinners and breakfasts are included. Gratuity for these meals is also included. In general, we leave lunches open so that you have time to explore and enjoy the local flavors en route.
  • All trail fees and permits are included.
  • NOT INCLUDED: Hiking pole rentals, beverages, desserts, lunches, gratuities to your guides, personal expenses and travel to and from the destination.
  • We will not have a support van on this tour. Your luggage will be transferred to our new hotel each day. If you wish to shorten the hiking routes, you can easily take a bus to do so
Weather

July and August can be very hot for walking. Although the average high in the capital of Vaduz is only 70 (June), 75 (July), 73 (August), and 68 (September) degrees, recent years have often been hotter. May, June, September, and October are probably the best times to be in Liechtenstein for a hiking vacation.

Extending Your Stay

We highly suggest you arrive to Europe at least one day before the tour starts, to account for any travel delays and to give yourself time to adjust to the overnight flight if you are coming from North America. Zurich as an arrival city is a good option, as is Bad Ragaz locally to where we are starting the tour. The Bodensee (Lake Konstanz) is very near our tour location and is a fun summer getaway. You are also not far from the Alps in both Switzerland and Austria.

Changes to Your Itinerary

While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience. If there is any one experience that is going to make or break your trip, please discuss this with us in advance! We will attempt to keep our website itinerary as current as possible and communicate any major changes with you in the weeks prior to the tour.

I'm Interested!

Interested in one of our tours but not quite ready to book? No problem, we can add you to our "Interested" list. This means we will follow up with you via email or phone as we get closer to selling out the trip to see if you are ready to make a decision to book or not.

Please note this does NOT mean we are holding a spot for you on the trip. In order to hold your spot, you will need to pay a trip deposit.
