Pristine beaches, stunning sunsets, a vibrant culture, and you might even find some gold on the island of Sifnos! Sifnos is a small Greek island located in the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, just south of the Greek mainland. Sifnos is an ideal destination for a relaxing holiday or a hiking adventure with its secluded coves, crystal clear water, and network of trails.
Apollonia
The main town of Sifnos is Apollonia. Located in the central part of the island, you can find the port and commercial center overlooking the Aegean Sea. A picturesque little village, Apollonia is home to many restaurants and tavernas. You’ll find museums, galleries, and archaeological sites to explore. With a population of about 4,000, the town is large enough to provide services but small enough to get around!
Beaches
One of the most popular beaches on Sifnos is Platis Gialos. This long, sandy beach is located near Apollonia with crystal-clear waters and stunning sunsets. Lined with palm trees, beach bars, and restaurants, it is the perfect spot for swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, and exploring underwater. There are plenty of other beaches for you to explore around the island as well.
Gold
Legend has it the island was once visited by the goddess Aphrodite and her beloved Adonis. They made the island their home, blessing it with wealth and prosperity. Gold can be found in the waters surrounding Sifnos and it is believed it was left behind by Aphrodite. Now, you can explore the gold and silver mines. If you want a great conversational piece with the locals, ask them about it!
Food & Drink
Food and drink lovers are definitely going to enjoy Sifnos. With traditional taverns, chic restaurants, and cozy cafes all around, there are plenty of delicious meals and snacks to sample. From freshly caught seafood and succulent meats to creamy cheeses and homemade pastries, the local cuisine is sure to tantalize your taste buds. And, of course, don’t forget the beverages! The traditional drink of choice is ouzo, a Greek anise-flavored aperitif, served neat or with cold water and ice. Whether you prefer a refreshing beer, a fruity cocktail, or a strong ouzo, you’ll find plenty of options.
Archaeology
Are you an archaeology aficionado? Sifnos is also home to many unique and fascinating archaeological sites. Several ancient churches, temples, and other monuments are still standing and considered to be the most important archaeological sites in the Cyclades. These sites are a testament to the island’s rich history and provide visitors with a glimpse into the past.
Sifnos Hiking
Hiking Sifnos is a truly unique experience. With its rugged terrain, gorgeous panoramic views, and diverse flora and fauna, it’s a hiker’s paradise. The variety of trails offers something for everyone, from easy strolls along the coastline to challenging day hikes. Greece is undergoing a revolution in hiking trails. Communities across the country are reviving the ancient paths locals used to walk from village to village. These are being turned into modern-day hiking trails. Sifnos has a network of ten such refurbished and signposted trails with a variety of distances and difficulties. We make use of these trails during our days on the island, led by our local Greek hiking guide Anna. We will learn about the flora, fauna, history, and culture along the way. Hiking Sifnos is a must-do for anyone looking to explore the authentic beauty of the Greek Islands.
