“Liechtenstein is pure fairy-tale stuff – a mountain principality
Lonely planet
governed by an iron-willed monarch, embedded deep in the Alps and crowned by turreted castles.“
Join us on this amazing inn-to-inn Liechtenstein hiking adventure as we start in Switzerland, hike across the width of the small country of Liechtenstein on the fast-becoming-famous Liechtenstein Trail, and finish in Austria.
Liechtenstein is a small and beautiful country situated on the banks of the Rhine in Central Europe. It is full of small towns, green valleys, and craggy mountains. The highest point is only 8,527 feet, meaning the hiking is much more moderate than in nearby Switzerland (15,203 feet) and Austria (12,460 feet). On our six-day Liechtenstein hiking adventure we use our feet to go from inn to inn across wide valleys and up and down hills, exploring the towns and local culture along the way. And one of the best aspects of the trip? Liechtenstein is relatively unvisited compared to other nearby countries, meaning we often have the hiking trails all to ourselves.
About Liechtenstein Hiking
Imagine exploring a country along just one trail! The Liechtenstein Trail is a 75-kilometer trail that passes through all 11 of the country’s municipalities. The trail was only created in 2019 – just before COVID – and so we will be among the first in the world to hike it. We even think we improve on this hike by starting in Switzerland (where we run our Switzerland Inline Skating & Biking Adventure) and ending in Austria, so that we actually hike from border to border across Liechtenstein.
We think you’ll be surprised at how much there is to discover here; a fairytale land with exciting stories, impressive sites, magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, and diverse cuisine and beverages, influenced by the nearby countries.
We hike between 9 and 15 kilometers (6 and 10 miles) each day, which for six days in a row is enough challenge for the majority of people but not too much that you cannot enjoy and complete the routes. The elevation gain each day varies from 250 to 700 meters (800 to 2,300 feet), meaning most days are moderate but we do have some steep hills to contend with and get your heart pumping. The hiking takes place on forested trails, paths through open valleys, and country roads.
Each day we shuttle your luggage forward to the next hotel so you only have to carry a day pack and you can easily jump on a bus to shorten any day’s route. Each evening we stay in high-quality, very-local hotels and eat nice meals that feature dishes from both Liechtenstein and abroad. The key to this sort of hiking is that you have plenty of time to take photos, talk with the locals (many people speak English), learn from our professional local hiking guide Kathi who will be with us on the trip, explore small towns, and stop for lunch.
Liechtenstein Culture
Liechtenstein has only two bordering countries: Switzerland and Austria. Thus Liechtenstein’s culture is heavily influenced by these two countries. (Interestingly, not only is Liechtenstein landlocked but it is one of only two double landlocked countries, meaning it is surrounded by countries that are themselves landlocked.) It is a constitutional monarchy led by the House of Liechtenstein.
The country is only 62 square miles in size, smaller than every US state. Its population is only 39,000 people and 6,000 of those live in the capital of Vaduz. You will experience a tiny country that is very proud of its culture, highly educated, and heavily influenced by its two much larger neighbors.

DAY 1: MAIENFELD, AUSTRIA > BALZERS, LIECHTENSTEIN
We meet in the mid-morning in the small village of Maienfeld in Switzerland for introductions and an overview of our tour. Maienfeld is easily reachable via train from Zurich in just over an hour or you can stay in nearby Bad Ragaz the night before. Our walk begins from Maienfeld and the first highlight en route is only two kilometers in: Heididorf, the actual village where Johanna Spyri wrote the book Heidi. The walk continues on a long gradual uphill for another 2.5 kilometers and then is downhill to our destination of Balzers. Because our hotel in Balzers permanently closed, we will shuttle to the next town of Triesen and back the next morning, allowing us to spend two nights in one hotel. Hiking Distance: 12 Kilometers (7.5 Miles)
DAY 2: BALZERS > TRIESEN
After breakfast we begin our hike, leaving Balzers for Triesen. We start out with a steep but short incline up to and down from the Gutenberg Castle. The castle is still intact and we can wander into the courtyard; it's first recorded mention is from the year 1296.The walk then continues along what is an old Roman road and stays mostly flat with a few ups and downs. Lunch is on your own in the town of Triesen, from where you can catch a bus to shorten the walk. After lunch the hike continues uphill to St Mamerten Chapel, an excellent place to stop and admire the view. After time for a shower and short rest, we'll have two treats for you. First we will have an optional guided tour of the Walser Museum, featuring local customs and traditional village life of the Walser people, from the Wallis (or Valais) region. Then we will do a private tasting of Wicca spirits made from local herbs. Dinner tonight is a short walk away at Restaurant Kainer. Hiking Distance: 15.4 Kilometers (9.6 Miles)
DAY 3: TRIESEN > VADUZ
Today is a shorter hike because we end in the capital city of Vaduz, which is a great place to enjoy some free time. Our route starts by leading us past a glacial erratic - a large boulder deposited here in the last ice age - and uphill to the village of Prufatscheng, which has excellent views over the valley. We then head downhill, sharply at times, past the ruins of Schalun Castle, perched above the city of Vaduz. We'll then pass the still-inhabited Vaduz Castle and continue on into the town center. You can choose to add an extra three kilometers by walking down to the Rhine River and the pedestrian bridge Alte Rheinbrücke and back. We'll also take a walk to the Hofkellerei Liechtenstein, the winery owned by the royal family, for a tasting. Dinner tonight is at Altenbach. Hiking Distance: 8.5 or 11.5 Kilometers (5.3 or 7.1 miles)
DAY 4: VADUZ > NENDELN
Today we pass through two small towns. The first hiking stage takes us about five kilometers past the University of Liechtenstein and into the village of Schaan, which is known for its ruins of an old Roman fort. The town of Schaan, with its population of under 5,000 people, has half a dozen restaurants and is a good spot to stop for lunch. You can also shorten today's route by catching a bus to Schaan (cutting off cutting off 4.9 kilomters) or a bus from here to our hotel in Nendeln (cutting off 7.6 kilometers). After lunch we continue on our hike, mostly uphill to the St Elisabeth nunnery and then continuing uphill Planken, Liechtenstein's smallest municipality with a population of 473. Planken has a beautiful view of the valley below and the Three Sisters mountains above. We then drop sharply downhill on a mountain path into the town of Nendlen, which has both an ancient Roman estate and a ceramics factory you can visit. Our hotel tonight is called the Weinstube, translated as a "wine tavern", and so of course we'll eat dinner in the hotel's restaurant! Hiking Distance: 12.5 Kilometers (7.8 Miles) with shorter options available
DAY 5: NENDELN > FELDKIRCH
Today we hike from Nendeln in Liechtenstein to Feldkirch in Austria. Our route starts out flat and then takes us sharply uphill to Schellenberg, which is famous for its Obere Berg, a ruined castle that is kept well preserved and which we can visit. We then head downhill and across a flat stretch into the city of Feldkirch, which is a fantastic small city on a river with a classic central historical core. The entire walk is 11 kilometers and we plan this day to start early so you can end up for lunch on your own in Feldkirch. In the afternoon you can visit the Schattenburg Castle & Museum or the SchokoMus chocolatier and patteserie. Those wishing to shorten the route can start with a bus to Schellenberg. Dinner tonight is at the nearby Wirtschaft zum Schutzenhaus, a delicious restaurant with an outdoor dining area serving Austrian cuisine. Hiking Distance: 11 Kilometers or 6.8 Miles
DAY 6: FELDKIRCH LOOP
On our final morning, we'll enjoy an Austrian breakfast in the hotel and then depart on a short Stadtschrofen Feldkirchen loop hike. This takes us past the old town, across a river, through a forest and up to a viewpoint above town. We'll complete the loop via a different route back to our hotel. You'll have time to shower before checking out. It is then on to our separate ways. Feldkirch has excellent train connections, including a one hour and 40 minute trip back to Zurich if you are heading there. Hiking Distance: 4 Kilometers (2.5 Miles)
Trip Accommodations
We move hotels every day on this tour, which does require a lot of packing and unpacking but also allows us the reward of hiking from inn to inn across the country.
NIGHTS 1 & 2 >> Hotel Oberland in Triesenberg
Hotel Oberland has an unbeatable combination of panoramic mountain views and warm, family-run hospitality. Perched high above the Rhine Valley, it offers the perfect peaceful retreat after a day of exploring Liechtenstein. Unfortunately, our hotel in Balzers closed permanently so we will shuttle to Hotel Oberland at the end of Day One and back to the trail the morning of Day Two, with the good news that we get to spend two nights in one hotel.
NIGHT 3 >> Hotel Vaduzerhof in Vaduz
The Hotel Vaduz is a four-star hotel located right in the middle of the capital city of Vaduz. Housed in a 170-year-old building, you can spend the night steeped in history while enjoying one of the new 35 rooms - some with a direct view of Vaduz Castle. This is another basic hotel without a lot of services, which you will not need as we will be spending much of our time exploring the city.
NIGHT 4 >> Weinstube in Nendeln
This is a small 17-room hotel located in the town of Nendeln. The name "Weinstube" is a traditional Germanic name meaning "wine tavern" but that belies the modern comforts of this family-style hotel. Customers rave about the food, both breakfast and dinner, and love the accompanying wine bar.
NIGHT 5 >> Hotel Bären in Feldkirch, Austria
The Hotel Bären occupies a building dating back to the 14th century, originally a patrician house, and later became the first trading house outside Feldkirch's city walls in the 18th century. It is a charming, family-run hotel that seamlessly blends historical character with modern comforts. Situated just a two-minute walk from Feldkirch's medieval old town and 400 meters from the main train station, the perfect place to end our adventure.
Book this TourArrival & Departure
Our main arrival and depart airport is Zurich. We start on Day One at 10:30 AM in the small town of Maienfeld in Switzerland. The town is easily reachable by train from Zurich and so you can stay in Zurich the night before and take a train in the morning. If you want to stay locally, Maienfeld has a few hotels and the original Heidi village but not much else. So another option would be to stay in the very nice small city of Bad Ragaz, which is 15 minutes away by train.
Our departure is from Feldkirch, Austria. Again, Feldkirch has excellent train connections to Zurich. You likely will not be able to fly back to North America on the final day of the tour unless you depart early and skip the morning walk.

- All of your dinners and breakfasts are included. Gratuity for these meals is also included. In general, we leave lunches open so that you have time to explore and enjoy the local flavors en route.
- All trail fees and permits are included.
- NOT INCLUDED Bike rental, beverages, desserts, lunches, gratuities to your guides, personal expenses and travel to and from the destination.

Weather
July and August can be very hot for walking. Although the average high in the capital of Vaduz is only 70 (June), 75 (July), 73 (August), and 68 (September) degrees, recent years have often been hotter. May, June, September, and October are probably the best times to be in Liechtenstein for a hiking vacation.
Extending Your Stay
We highly suggest you arrive to Europe at least one day before the tour starts, to account for any travel delays and to give yourself time to adjust to the overnight flight if you are coming from North America. Zurich as an arrival city is a good option, as is Bad Ragaz locally to where we are starting the tour. The Bodensee (Lake Konstanz) is very near our tour location and is a fun summer getaway. You are also not far from the Alps in both Switzerland and Austria.
Changes to Your Itinerary
While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience. If there is any one experience that is going to make or break your trip, please discuss this with us in advance! We will attempt to keep our website itinerary as current as possible and communicate any major changes with you in the weeks prior to the tour.
