Dutch & German Beer

In total, we will visit 16 Dutch and German breweries spending time getting our brewing questions answered by pro brewers while enjoying samples of their beer. We’ll visit a broad range of breweries from large, internationally-known brands to small craft brewers you’ve never heard of before. We’ll visit historic breweries where beer styles were first made, tour a Trappist brewery in the Netherlands, and see plenty of small-scale breweries – some started in the last decade and others hundreds of years old.  We’ll also pay a visit to a Dutch malting company for an up-close view of how malt is made.

The Netherlands is a significant beer-producing and exporting nation, with the number of breweries quadrupling in recent years.

  • There are over 900 breweries in the Netherlands from the very large and well-known Heineken to a new wave of craft breweries to old, historic small-scale brewers and one Trappist brewery
  • The Netherlands exports the most beer of any European country – approximately 50% of its production.

Germany is renowned for its rich beer culture and is birthplace of many cherished beer styles.

  • We will visit the historic city Dusseldorf where Altbier was first brewed and is still the main beer style enjoyed by locals.
  • Just down the Rhine river from Dusseldorf is beautiful Cologne where they started their own famous beer style: Kölsch. Trays of Kölsch are brought out for customers and waiters keep track of how many beers you’ve had by making marks on your coaster.

Walking & Biking Through the Netherlands & Germany

In between sipping exquisite beer, we’ll spend our days walking around both cities and small villages. We’ll discover downtown Amsterdam and other smaller towns like Delft, a canal-ringed city in the western Netherlands. We’ll bike along scenic canals and on tree-covered path through the Dutch countryside.

The walking and biking on this trip is moderate, designed to appeal to most travelers looking for some activity to soak in the scenery in between beer stops

Please note we are wrapping up the trip in Cologne, Germany right before Oktoberfest starts up in Munich allowing you the chance to easily extend your beer adventure on your own and experience one of the world’s greatest beer events.

  • Visit Dutch breweries during our travels including a tour of a Trappist brewery and a malting facility.
  • Meet with local brewers to get your brewing questions answered as you sample their beers.

Day 1

Welcome to Amsterdam! We’ll meet-up at our central Amsterdam hotel in the morning before strolling over to Heineken for a private tour of their original brewery, a beer tasting paired with matching bites, followed by a scenic canal cruise on Heineken's own boat stocked with beer . Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch at Be Biertuin, then walk off the meal on our way to Brouwerij ’t IJ, where we’ll tour their brewery located in an iconic wooden windmill. We’ll end the day with dinner at the cozy brewpub De Bekeerde Suster. And for those up for more, an optional pub crawl awaits exploring some of Amsterdam’s best beer bars.

Day 2

After breakfast and hotel checkout, we’ll transfer by private bus to the charming town of Delft. There, Yannick will lead us on a relaxed and insightful walking tour through the historic center before we settle in for a guided brewery tour, tasting, and lunch at Delfts Brouwhuis. The brewpub is located on a historic brewing site dating back over 700 years ago. In the afternoon, we’ll hop on bikes for a scenic ride through the picturesque Midden-Delfland region, offering views of green polders, canals, and charming villages. We'll arrive in Rotterdam and check into our hotel, freshen up, and head out for a private evening tour, tasting, and dinner at the impressive Stadshaven Brouwerij—the second largest independent brewery in the Netherlands!

Day 3

After breakfast and checkout, we’ll drive just over an hour to Koningshoeven, home of the renowned La Trappe Trappist Brewery. We'll begin our day with a peaceful countryside bike ride—about 20 miles—looping through the scenic North Brabant landscape and finishing at the Abbey gates. There, we’ll enjoy a relaxed lunch in the Abbey restaurant before diving into the world of Trappist brewing on a guided tour of the La Trappe Brewery, learning how monks have combined tradition and innovation to craft these iconic beers since 1884. In the late afternoon, we’ll transfer to the charming city of ’s Hertogenbosch, where we’ll hop on a one-hour guided boat tour through its historic canals before heading to our hotel. You'll then have the evening free to explore the city center and enjoy dinner at your leisure.

Day 4

After breakfast we will head to Holland Malt for a behind-the-scenes look at the malting process turning grains like barley and wheat into malt for your next batch of beer. We’ll then cross the border into Germany for a hearty lunch of beef roulade, currywurst, and mashed potatoes in a rustic, countryside setting at Landwirtschaft Bolten. After lunch, we’ll head next door to Privatbrauerei Bolten for a deep dive into Altbier, the region’s signature style, with a guided tour and tasting at one of the oldest Altbier breweries in the world. By late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Düsseldorf, check into our hotel, and have a bit of free time to explore or relax. In the evening, we’ll walk to dinner at local Altbier brewery Brauerei zum Schlüssel. On the way back to the hotel we'll grab one last Altbier at nearby Brauerei Kürzer.

Day 5

After a delicious breakfast, we’ll head out on foot to meet our local guide for a walking tour of Düsseldorf’s Altstadt, the charming old town lined with history, cobblestones, and classic Altbier. Of course, we’ll pause for a refreshing pour at Im Füchschen—because no walking tour in Düsseldorf is complete without a beer break! Next we’ll arrive at Uerige, one of the city’s most iconic breweries, and one of the few breweries left in Germany where draught beer is still served in old-fashioned wooden casks and poured by gravity. We'll get a behind-the-scenes tour followed by a hearty lunch in their lively brewpub. In the afternoon, we’ll hop on the bus and transfer to Köln, breaking up the ride with a fun pitstop at Brauhaus Pütz (a local favorite from Yannick’s short list of hidden gems). We’ll check into our Cologne hotel and have time to relax before walking to dinner at the beloved FRÜH brewery, where Kölsch flows and the atmosphere is as classic as it gets—you'll have to be there to experience it; the beer more than speaks for itself.

Day 6

Our final full day begins with breakfast at the hotel before we set out for a guided walking tour through Köln’s historic city center. We’ll explore Roman ruins, Gothic spires, and centuries of stories—led by a local expert who’ll help us get to know the heart of the city. The tour will finish sweetly at the famous Lindt Chocolate Museum, where we’ll enjoy a private behind-the-scenes tour (and maybe a sample or two!). You’ll then have free time to explore and grab lunch on your own—perhaps riverside or tucked into a cozy corner of the old town. In the afternoon, we’ll regroup for a casual beer walking tour led by Yannick, with stops like Brauhaus Sion and another beloved local brewery, Brauerei zur Malzmühle. We’ll end our evening in proper Kölsch fashion: with a tour and celebratory farewell dinner at Cologne's oldest microbrewery Päffgen Brewery, raising a glass (or several) to a week of great beer, even better company, and memories to last long after the final toast.

Day 7

After breakfast, you’re free to check out and head to the airport for your homeward journey or go on your next adventure! Please note we timed the end of this trip to coincide with the start of Oktoberfest in Munich. The first Oktoberfest kegs are tapped in Munich midday tomorrow giving you enough time to catch a train from Cologne to Munich today if you are interested in experiencing one of the world's most famous beer events.
