Zephyr Adventure has a long history of catering to solo travelers.
We started out in 1997 as a specialty tour company running inline skating tours in Europe and the United States. While our vacations were not specifically solo travel tours, many of our skaters did come on their own, in large part because they often did not have friends or family members ready to do an inline skating vacation. We have had a high percentage of solo travelers on our tours ever since.
Catering to Solo Travelers
As early as our very first year, we at Zephyr Adventures had a single supplement policy that appealed to solo travelers. Unlike most tour companies that require solo travelers to pay a single supplement, we at Zephyr Adventures never did. Instead, we provided the option to pay a single supplement to get a single room but would pair solo travelers with someone else if they wished to avoid the supplement. And crucially, if we could not find another traveler to pair someone with, we would give them a single room at no charge.
This policy was much loved by our solo travelers. However, as we came out of the pandemic the number of solo travelers wishing to be paired with another traveler dropped precipitously. On all our tours we still give solo travelers the option to be matched but most now choose to pay a supplement for their own room and are required to do so if we cannot find a match for them.
Solo Travelers and Group Bonding
In addition to the various ways we try to make booking travel favorable to solo travelers, throughout our history, we have made a specific effort to welcome solo travelers, and encourage everyone on a tour to get know their comrades in adventure . This starts with a pre-tour email to all tour participants when everyone is asked to introduce themselves. On the first day of the trip we do in-person introductions and often ask people to sit next to someone they don’t know at dinner that night.
But the real group bonding comes throughout the trip during the activities. Because our tours are designed to accommodate people with different interests and fitness levels, often our travelers group up each day based on those interests or ability levels. So a person coming with a spouse might actually bike with a couple of solo travelers she did not know before the tour. Or a solo traveler might bond with another solo traveler who shares the same interest in stopping along the trail to take photos of wildflowers.
The magic of group travel that results in new friendships is so ideal for solo travelers!
Solo Travel Tours
In addition to welcoming solo travelers on all our tours, we at times have offered specific solo travel tours. These tours are designated for travelers coming on their own (or with a friend). Often, solo travelers are single. Just as often, solo travelers have a partner at home who doesn’t want to or can’t travel on this type of tour.
In some ways, these solo travel tours are just taking the normal camaraderie of our group tours and ramping them up to a new level. When everyone is coming to a tour alone, everyone has an incentive to bond with other travelers. The result can be even more fun and even more friendships made.
Say, What? No Supplement!
One of the biggest perks of joining a Zephyr solo traveler-specific tour is that you don’t have to worry about paying a single supplement just to have your own room. Unlike many travel companies that charge extra fees for solo travelers, our solo tours are designed with you in mind—giving you the freedom, privacy, and comfort of your own space without the added cost. It’s a rare and valuable benefit that makes it easier (and more affordable) to say yes to the adventure you’ve been dreaming of.
