If you’re planning to travel within the United States this year or simply pass through an airport, it’s important to be aware of a significant change coming soon: the enforcement of the Real ID Act will begin on May 7, 2025. As a group tour operator, we want to ensure all our travelers are prepared and have the proper identification needed for a smooth and stress-free travel experience.
Starting on May 7, 2025, anyone in the U.S. who is 18 or older will need a compliant license or another approved form of ID, like a passport, if they want to fly on domestic flights within the country.
You can identify whether your ID is compliant by looking for a star symbol at the top of the card. This star indicates that your ID meets the new federal standards for security.
When Will I Need This To Travel?
- For Domestic Air Travel:
If you plan to fly within the U.S. after May 7, 2025, you’ll need a compliant license or another TSA-approved form of ID such as a passport or military ID. - For International Travel:
No changes here—you’ll still need your passport just like before. But if you’re taking a domestic flight as part of an international itinerary, you can use your Real ID for that leg of your journey.
How Do I Get a Real ID?
To obtain a compliant ID, you must visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in person and bring documentation that proves:
- Your full legal name
- Your date of birth
- Your Social Security number
- Two documents showing proof of address
- Documentation showing your lawful status in the U.S.
Requirements can vary slightly by state, so be sure to check your state’s DMV website before you go.
Tip: Don’t wait until the last minute—DMVs are seeing longer than usual wait times for appointments and to get in to apply, as the deadline approaches.
Not Interested in Having One?
You don’t necessarily need to have the compliant ID, but if you don’t have one, don’t forget to bring another TSA-approved ID, such as your passport, when flying domestically—your non-compliant drivers license will not be valid after May 7, 2025.
We know our Zephyrites love to travel, whether it’s a quick trip to a nearby state or an adventure overseas! To make your journey as smooth as possible, it’s important to have the right ID with you. If you’re not quite sure if your ID meets compliant standards, just check for a gold or black star on it.
