One of the joys of working for an adventure travel company is being able to set up new tours around the world in locations where we ourselves want to travel. Bolivia, the landlocked country in the middle of South America, is one of those destinations.
Announcing a brand new Bolivia Multisport Exploratory Adventure from August 15 – 24, 2025.
Why Travel to Bolivia?
Bolivia excites us, for a number of reasons:
- Bolivia is relatively unvisited for tourism, with vastly fewer tourists than nearby countries Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Chile. Heck, Bolivia gets fewer visitors than the tiny nation of Turks & Caicos.
- At 62% Bolivia has the highest percentage of indigenous people of any country in Latin America, according to the Congressional Research Office. This compares to 24% in Peru, 11% in Chile, and only 2% in Costa Rica. Bolivia is the best country to see what life was like before the Spanish arrived.
- Travel to Bolivia is considered safe, especially when with an organized group with a local guide.
- There is a LOT of geographic diversity, including the Andes Mountains, the rain forest, Lake Titicaca, and the largest salt flat in the world. We visit all of these on one 10-day tour.
- Bolivia has embraced adventure tourism. We will hike, bicycle, kayak, and river raft on this tour. (We declined the suggestion of scuba diving but that was an option too.)
- Travel to Bolivia is easy. You can receive a visa upon arrival at the airport.

Preparing for Travel to Bolivia
At the same time, this Bolivia Exploratory Adventure has its challenges.
- Bolivia is at a very high altitude. You will want to fly in at least a day before the tour starts and we take it easy on the first day to help us acclimatize.
- We cover long distances in a vehicle. The good news is most of our tour is within a reasonable drive of the capital of La Paz. But to see everything we see, we will be spending time in vans. We reduce this by taking an internal flight to Oroico to see the salt flats.
- Hotels are of variable quality. In La Paz our hotel is very nice. Outside the capital we have some luxury lodges (like in the rain forest) but we also stay in two simple, community-owned hotels. We do this on purpose because staying only in top hotels just serves to insulate us from the real Bolivia.
- This is an active tour. You should be fit to hike 4 – 8 miles on trails. The other activities (kayaking, rafting, and biking) are all optional.
- This is an Exploratory Adventure, which means you will be participating with us on the first running of this tour. Our Exploratory Adventurers love this. See this blog post about our Exploratory Adventure to the country of Georgia last year.

By its nature, this tour is a bit more adventurous than most of our trips. But if you are ready to travel to Bolivia, consider joining us on this Bolivia Multisport Exploratory Adventure from August 15 – 24, 2025.
