Why biking in Dordogne? The Dordogne region is one of the best cycling destinations in France, which makes it one of the best cycling destinations in the world.
In my opinion, France is the number one country for bike touring in the world. The population density outside of major cities is not high and the country tends to pave even the smallest farming roads. This makes for outstanding bike tour routes.
My History With Biking in Dordogne
I actually did an organized bicycle tour in the Dordogne region about 30 years ago, a few years before I founded Zephyr Adventures. I fondly remember the warm days, beautiful blue skies, and amazing hill-top villages. The local food was excellent and, being located just to the east of Bordeaux, so was the wine.
Our Dordogne Adventure
We have created a brand-new seven-day Dordogne Biking Adventure. We stay in the small towns of Montignac-Lascaux and Les Eyzies, home to the famous Lascaux caves housing paintings done by our prehistoric ancestors. We visit Sarlat-le-Canéda, with its winding medieval streets. We make the winding climb up to medieval Rocamadour, perched on top of a cliff. We dine in delicious local restaurants, drink Bordeaux wine, and soak up the French culture.
Yes, the Dordogne region is hilly. I vividly remember sweating away on multiple long uphill climbs, with the reward being the charming town at the top with its views and lunch stops. The difference, 30 years later, as that we can now offer e-bikes, which will make your climbs much easier.
I am not sure why we at Zephyr Adventures have never offered a vacation for those interested in biking in Dordogne. But 30 years after I first cycled there, we have a Dordogne Biking & E-Biking Adventure on our schedule!
