Southwest Parks Hiking Adventure

April 12 - 18, 2026

Connect with the mystery and mysticism of southern Utah in this fantastic and wild landscape of sand, stone and sky. Perhaps nowhere else in the Southwest can compete with southern Utah when it comes to the sheer number of geological works of artLovely Planet

Some places don’t just impress you—they stay with you. Hiking through Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon is a journey into vast silence, sculpted stone, and perspective-shifting beauty. Each day brings a new kind of wonder: sunrise light spilling into red rock amphitheaters, narrow canyon walls glowing with color, and sweeping overlooks that make the world feel bigger—and your worries smaller. This adventure isn’t about checking parks off a list; it’s about slowing down, moving through these iconic landscapes on foot, and sharing unforgettable moments with fellow hikers who feel just as inspired to be there as you do.

The Hiking

This Southwest adventure offers diverse hikes for every pace and skill level. Choose from short walks or challenging routes, exploring at your own pace with comfort and confidence.

In Zion, trails like the Watchman Trail range from gentle strolls to rewarding climbs, while Bryce Canyon offers hoodoo walks and scenic rim trails. As the journey continues through Page and into the Grand Canyon, the terrain shifts from serene rim paths to more demanding descents and climbs, each offering a new perspective of the vast landscape. With every step, you can move at your own pace while soaking in the Southwest’s unforgettable beauty, from winding river canyons and desert mesas to towering cliffs and vibrant rock formations.

Your Guides

Katie Schroepfer is passionate about animals, the outdoors, travel, and getting others out to experience the awe of the world in whatever way they can.

Kris Keys has been guiding for Zephyr for a quarter of a century. True to her Midwestern roots, she always aims to be kind and friendly. Her passion is making sure everyone is having fun on their adventure and feels well taken care of.

Kris is a true professional, leader, guide, problem-solver and go-to girl. She is the reason I have traveled around the world with Zephyr! She also has the best snacks.

The Towns

This Southwest Parks adventure leads us through three unforgettable towns, each serving as a gateway to some of America’s most spectacular landscapes. We begin in Springdale, Utah, where striking red rock backdrops frame walkable streets filled with cafés, galleries, and local outfitters. It’s the ideal home base for exploring Zion National Park, offering both charm and convenience.

Bryce Canyon City offers easy access to Bryce Canyon National Park’s otherworldly hoodoos and scenic rim drives, while also providing the small-town charm of classic diners and quiet evenings under the stars. Just minutes from the park entrance, it’s the perfect spot for us to rest between adventures among the hoodoos and winding down after a day on the trails. With its welcoming atmosphere and close connection to the park, Bryce Canyon City makes it easy to experience the magic of this unique landscape at your own pace.

No Southwest Parks adventure would be complete without a trip to the Grand Canyon. Rustic lodges, breathtaking viewpoints, and the legendary Rim Trail all converge. These towns provide more than just a place to stay. They’re vibrant, welcoming communities that enhance the beauty and adventure of the parks they border.

The Hotels & Restaurants

Throughout the trip, we’ll stay in comfortable accommodations chosen for their prime locations, warm hospitality, and connection to the surrounding landscapes. We’ll stay close to the parks for maximum trail time and a relaxing retreat at day’s end. Rooms are well-appointed with everything you need for a restful night.

The cuisine on this adventure highlights the flavors and character of the Southwest, with hearty trail lunches enjoyed in the heart of the parks and satisfying dinners that bring each day to a close. Along the journey, you’ll enjoy a mix of casual eateries and refined dining, each highlighting regional specialties with fresh, flavorful ingredients. Enjoy everything from classic American comfort food to inventive, locally inspired dishes, all crafted to nourish and delight after a day on the trails. From post-hike drinks to dinners with stunning views, each meal fuels your adventure and strengthens your connection to the landscape. Sharing these meals together adds another layer of camaraderie, making the dining experiences just as memorable as the adventures themselves.

DAY 1

We’ll meet in Las Vegas after lunch and set out on a scenic 2.5-hour drive to Zion. Our first hike on the Watchman Trail offers the perfect introduction, with sweeping canyon views and the soft glow of late-day light. After settling into our Springdale hotel, we’ll gather for a relaxed dinner at Porter’s to savor good food and a chance to get to know each other.

Hiking Distance: 2.8 miles, 479.4ft elevation gain

DAY 2

After breakfast, we set out early for one of Zion’s most iconic experiences: the Narrows. Hiking bottom-up to Big Springs, we’ll wade through the Virgin River, surrounded by towering canyon walls that shift with the light (weather dependent, we will have an alternative hike planned if there is any chance of flash floods). A trail lunch keeps us fueled before we step back in time with an afternoon visit to Grafton, one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the West. Once a small farming community along the Virgin River, Grafton was abandoned after floods, harsh conditions, and isolation made life unsustainable. Today, its restored schoolhouse, pioneer homes, and weathered cemetery offer a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century frontier life. We’ll enjoy dinner at Zion Brew Pub, followed by a relaxed stroll along the Pa’rus Trail, where soft desert light and open skies bring the day to a perfect close.

Morning Hiking Distances: 4, 6, or 9.4 miles, maximum 334 ft elevation gain
Evening Hike: 1.6 miles

DAY 3

Today we'll check out of our Zion hotel and head out for one more Zion hike: Canyon Overlook Trail. This hike rewards us with one of Zion’s most breathtaking panoramas: an expansive view looking down into the heart of the canyon. From there,we take the scenic drive along Highway 9, winding through the historic Zion Tunnel and across open desert landscapes before arriving in Tropic for lunch on your own. In the afternoon, we enter Bryce Canyon, where we’ll stretch our legs and hike Sheep Creek and Swamp Canyon, a quieter corner of Bryce offering sweeping views, colorful rock formations, and fewer crowds. A leisurely drive along the rim road offers even more perspectives of this otherworldly landscape before we check into our hotel. Dinner awaits at Bryce Canyon Pines, with an optional sunset outing at Sunset Point to close the day in glowing shades of orange and pink.

Morning Hiking Distance: 1 mile, 154 ft elevation gain
Afternoon Bryce Canyon Hiking Distances: 2.4 or 4.4 miles, maximum 859 ft elevation gain

DAY 4

After breakfast and check-out, we’ll take a short drive to the trailhead for the Navajo Loop, descending among the park’s iconic hoodoos. By midday, we’ll head south to Kanab, Utah, where you’ll have time for lunch on your own in this charming western town known for its film history and red rock scenery. From there, we continue to Page, Arizona, and check into our hotel before stretching our legs on the Rimview Trail, a local favorite with panoramic views over Lake Powell and the surrounding desert. Dinner is on your own this evening, with plenty of local options to choose from.

Morning Hiking Distances: 2.9 or 4.9 miles, maximum 1,475 ft elevation gain
Afternoon Page Hiking Distances: 2 or 4.4 miles, maximum 171 ft elevation gain

DAY 5

The famous Horseshoe Bend and the Colorado River Overlook start this day, taking in the stunning views before a short hike to stretch our legs. From there, we drive to Grand Canyon Village, arriving in time for lunch on your own amid the historic heart of the park. In the afternoon, we’ll hike a portion of the Rim Trail from Grand Canyon Village to Hermit’s Rest, offering iconic canyon vistas at every turn. After checking into our hotel, we’ll gather for dinner at Maswik, a cozy spot to relax and reflect on the grandeur of the day.

Morning Page Hiking Distances: 1.5 miles or 5.29miles, maximum 538 ft elevation gain
Afternoon Grand Canyon Hiking Distances: 2.6 or 4.6 miles, maximum 237 ft elevation gain

DAY 6

This morning, we’ll embark on a hike along the South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge. Sweeping views of the canyon floor and towering cliffs await for us. For those preferring a gentler pace, the Rim Trail offers equally spectacular vistas without the descent. Lunch is on your own in the village, giving you a chance to explore or relax. In the afternoon, we drive to Flagstaff and check into our hotel before gathering for a relaxed dinner on-site, reflecting on the awe-inspiring landscapes we’ve experienced.

Morning Hiking Distances: 1.8 or 3 miles, maximum 1,181 ft elevation gain

DAY 7

After breakfast and check-out, we’ll drive to Sedona, arriving in time to hike through the stunning red-rock landscapes of Red Rock State Park or explore the town’s charming streets and galleries. Lunch is on your own, giving you a chance to savor local flavors. Weather

In mid-April, you can expect a wide range of weather conditions. Zion offers mild, spring-like days (65–75 °F) that are perfect for hiking, with cooler nights (40–45 °F), so bring layers. Bryce Canyon, at a higher elevation, has sunny days in the 50s–60s °F that make the hoodoos glow, but nights can be much colder, dropping to 25–32 °F. The Grand Canyon’s South Rim is in between, with crisp daytime highs in the 50s °F and chilly nights in the 20s–30s °F. Spring weather can change quickly, so pack for all conditions: a raincoat, extra layers, and a sun hat.

Extending Your Stay

There is still plenty to explore after our Southwest Parks adventure! We recommend renting a car in Sedona or Phoenix, and extending your adventure by heading south to explore Arizona’s vibrant desert landscapes and rich culture. Spend a couple of days in Tucson, where you can hike among towering saguaros in Saguaro National Park, stroll the historic Barrio, and enjoy the city’s renowned Mexican cuisine. Continue to Bisbee, a quirky former mining town with colorful architecture, art galleries, and a laid-back vibe, or visit nearby Tombstone for a taste of Wild West history. For more hiking, explore the rugged Chiricahua National Monument with its otherworldly rock formations, or the rolling hills of the Huachuca Mountains.

Changes to Your Itinerary

While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience. If there is any one experience that is going to make or break your trip, please discuss this with us in advance! We will attempt to keep our website itinerary as current as possible and communicate any major changes with you in the weeks prior to the tour.
