Sansepolcro Hiking & Biking Adventure

June 12 - 17, 2027 $4,050 Hiking, Biking, Culture, & Culinary Experiences

Some trips are about a destination. This one is about something more.

In 2027, Zephyr Adventures turns 30 — and we’re celebrating the way we know best: with an extraordinary active trip to a corner of the world that many travelers never visit, accompanied by a friend of ours, Giovanni, whom we have known for over 20 years. This tour is offered exclusively to Zephyr alumni, our way of saying thank you to the community of travelers who made three decades of adventure possible. We hope you’ll join us – book early as we have a maximum of 14 rooms.

The region surrounding Sansepolcro sits in the far eastern edge of Tuscany, pressed against the border with Umbria, cradled by the Apennine hills and the young Upper Tiber River. This is not the Tuscany of tour buses and crowded piazzas. It is quieter, more authentic, and more beautiful for both of those things. Medieval hilltop towns rise above forested valleys. Ancient Roman roads are still walked today. Pilgrimage routes wind through woodland that hasn’t changed in centuries. And everywhere you turn, the food, the wine, and the art carry the unmistakable fingerprint of a region that has literally been producing remarkable things since the Renaissance.

Sansepolcro

Sansepolcro is our base — a small, walled city with a beautifully preserved historic center, a world-class museum, and the kind of daily life that hasn’t been curated for tourists. It is home to Giovanni and Michela, our local partners and dear friends, who have been working with Zephyr Adventures for over 20 years. Many of our alumni have met and grown to love Giovanni, with whom we have run dozens of tours. We decided to offer this as a special 30th anniversary tour so you, our alumni, can travel with Giovanni in his home town and home region. You will not be visiting a destination so much as being welcomed into a place by locals who love the area deeply and have planned an itinerary to share it with you.

Sansepolcro Area Hiking & Biking

Our week moves between hiking and biking depending on the terrain and the day — and each activity reveals a different dimension of the landscape.

The hiking takes you into the Tuscan Apennines on ancient trails, through dense woodlands, past medieval hermitages, and up to ridgelines with far-reaching views over the Valtiberina valley and beyond. The full routes are moderately challenging, shorter options are available for every hike, and you are always welcome to opt out of any activity and spend the time your own way.

The biking follows quiet country roads through olive groves, vineyards, and hill towns that feel genuinely timeless. One day takes you through the Umbrian valley below Assisi on a mostly flat 26-kilometer route. Another covers 35–40 kilometers between Sansepolcro, Citerna, and the historic town of Anghiari, with shorter pickup options available at multiple points along the way. E-bikes are available if needed.

The Culinary Experience

To eat and drink in this corner of Italy is to understand something about the Renaissance that no museum can quite convey: these people believed deeply in doing things well, and that belief extended to the table.

The week includes a private dinner and wine tasting at Cantina La Palerna, a beautiful estate with sweeping valley views. A truffle hunting experience in the woods near Citerna — and a tasting of what you find — offers one of the most memorable food experiences available anywhere in Italy. A visit to the Frantoio di Spello olive oil mill includes a proper tasting of the region’s extraordinary oil. A Sagrantino wine estate in Umbria introduces you to one of Italy’s most compelling and least-known red wines. And then there is the cooking class: the option to learn from chef Alessia, who has spent years researching the foods of this region as they were prepared hundreds of years ago during the Renaissance.

Your Guides

Allan Wright, Zephyr’s founder and owner, has traveled to 68 countries and lived in four on three continents. He is a jack of all outdoor activities, enjoying hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing, and much more. His goal in starting Zephyr was to help improve the world by providing outstanding travel experiences and to have fun doing it. Allan currently lives in New York with his daughter, where he also founded and runs the local volleyball club.

Giovanni in Sansepolcro

Giovanni Ramaccioni is our Italian specialist and a man of many talents. Not only is he an expert on the food, culture, and history of his country, but he is also an expert on biking, hiking, and this region. He also is intimately familiar with Italian wines and can give you his opinion on why they are much better than French wines! He has guided biking and hiking tours in throughout Italy for decades and knows the area like the back of his hand. Giovanni and his college sweetheart Michela live in Umbria with their two kids.

Towns & Cities We Visit

One of the distinctive pleasures of this tour is the sheer number and variety of historic towns within reach of Sansepolcro — each one with its own character, its own art, its own reason to linger.

Sansepolcro — Our home base for the week. A beautifully preserved walled city, birthplace of Piero della Francesca, with a world-class museum housing his masterwork “The Resurrection.” One of the most authentic small cities in Tuscany, with almost no tourist infrastructure and a daily life that feels entirely genuine.

Anghiari — Perched on a ridge above the Tiber Valley, Anghiari’s medieval streets and views over the surrounding countryside have made it one of the most admired small towns in Italy. The site of a famous Renaissance battle depicted by Leonardo da Vinci.

Citerna — A tiny, perfectly preserved hilltop village with panoramic views over the Tiber Valley into Umbria. Most visitors to Tuscany never find it. We’ll arrive by bike.

Spello — A beautifully intact Roman and medieval town on the slopes of Monte Subasio in Umbria, known for its extraordinary Pinturicchio frescoes and its position at the heart of Umbria’s olive oil country.

Assisi — One of the more famous cities in Italy, known for its patron saint Francis of Assisi. The city also has fantastic, narrow, winding streets and beautiful views over the Umbria valley below.

Bevagna — One of Umbria’s hidden gems: an ancient Roman town in the flat valley below Assisi with a remarkably preserved medieval piazza and craftsmen’s workshops that still operate using centuries-old techniques.

Cortona — The hilltop Tuscan city made famous by Frances Mayes’ “Under the Tuscan Sun,” with sweeping views over the Val di Chiana and one of the most rewarding historic centers in the region. We approach it on foot, hiking up through cypress-lined avenues and ancient Roman roads.

Cultural Highlights

The cultural richness of this tour is as striking as the physical activity — perhaps more so. This region sits at the intersection of Tuscan and Umbrian history, Renaissance art, medieval spirituality, and living traditions.

Piero della Francesca’s “The Resurrection” — Widely considered one of the greatest paintings in the world, housed in the Civic Museum of Sansepolcro. Aldous Huxley called it the greatest painting he had ever seen. Seeing it in the city where Piero was born and lived is an experience of a different order than seeing it in a reproduction.

Hermitage of Montecasale — An ancient Franciscan hermitage tucked into the woodland above Sansepolcro, reached on foot through trails that have been walked by pilgrims for eight centuries.

La Verna Sanctuary — One of the most significant Franciscan sanctuaries in Italy, built on a dramatic forested outcrop where St. Francis of Assisi received the stigmata in 1224. The monastery complex is serene, historically profound, and visually extraordinary.

Pinturicchio Frescoes, Spello — A chapel full of brilliantly preserved Renaissance frescoes by Bernardino di Betto (known as Pinturicchio), one of the most gifted painters of the Umbrian school.

Craftsmen’s Workshops, Bevagna — Living museums of medieval craft: a paper mill using Roman-era techniques, a candle maker, a mosaic workshop. These are working craftspeople, not tourist demonstrations.

Frantoio di Spello Olive Oil Mill — A working olive oil mill where the process of pressing oil from the olives grown on the slopes of Monte Subasio is explained and tasted in full.

Aboca Museum, Sansepolcro — A remarkable museum dedicated to the history of medicinal herbs and natural medicine, housed in a beautifully restored historic building. Aboca is one of Italy’s leading herbal medicine companies and has its roots in this region. We do not visit this museum as part of our tour but it is available to do on your own.

DAY 1 — Welcome to Sansepolcro

Italy multsiportWe pick you up at 10:00 AM at the train station in Arezzo and transfer to Sansepolcro, our home for the week. After settling in, we take a guided walking tour of this beautifully preserved walled city, which is home to our Italian partners of 20 years. Lunch is on your own in the city center, with plenty of wonderful options to explore.

This afternoon we head into the hills above Sansepolcro for our first hike: a scenic loop through dense woodland and up to Poggio della Rocca, a rocky ridge with sweeping views over the Valtiberina valley. Our goal is the ancient Hermitage of Montecasale. The trail is rich in landscape variety and peaceful beyond description. A shorter route option is available.

We close the day with a transfer to Cantina La Palerna for a private winery visit, wine tasting, and dinner — a lovely estate with beautiful views of the valley that sets exactly the right tone for the week ahead.

Hiking Distance: 8.4 km | Elevation Gain: 359 m | Shorter 4.5 km option available

DAY 2 — Bikes, Truffles, and Anghiari

Italy multisport tourThis morning we set out by bike from Sansepolcro toward Citerna. On arrival in this perfectly preserved hilltop village, we leave the bikes and head into the surrounding woods for a truffle hunting experience — one of the most memorable things you can do in this part of Italy. Afterward, we gather in Citerna's main square, with its extraordinary views over the Tiber Valley, for a truffle tasting.

We pick up the bikes again and continue to Anghiari, a beautiful medieval town, for lunch on your own and time to explore the streets and views. We then ride back to Sansepolcro to complete the loop. Dinner tonight is in Sansepolcro at a classic Italian restaurant, a short walk from our hotel.

Total Ride: 35–40 km | Short route options: pickup available in Citerna or Anghiari

DAY 3 — Hiking Near Gubbio

Italy multisport tour

We shuttle to the town of Gubbio with its preserved Roman theater and begin our hike by following the course of the Camignano stream, which leads us to the lower part of town. From there, we enter Ranghiasci Park and, along a secondary path, make our way up to the upper gate of Gubbio, Porta Sant’Ubaldo. Leaving the town behind, we follow a trail that climbs along the limestone slopes of Mount Ingino until we reach Parco del Coppo. Along the way, you’ll notice aromatic Mediterranean plants such as helichrysum, artemisia, and savory. Once at Parco del Coppo, we continue up to Mount d’Ansciano, where we are rewarded with stunning 360° views over the valley and much of Central Italy’s mountain landscape. We then carry on through pine and oak woods until reaching the Bottaccione Gorge, where we take the beautiful panoramic aqueduct trail back towards town. As we enter Gubbio,  for a fun local tradition, those who dare can run three laps around the Bargello Fountain to earn the playful “crazy license.” And for food lovers, it’s the perfect chance to discover local specialties like crescia sul panaro, brustengo, or ganascioni with barcarola. After lunch in town, we return to Sansepolcro for some free time before meeting to attend a cooking class with our friend Alessia, who specializes in Renaissance era cuisine.

Hiking Distance: 10 km | Elevation Gain: 420 m | Shorter 3 km option available

DAY 4 — Umbria by Bike: Olive Oil, Frescoes, and Sagrantino

Italy multisport tourWe transfer this morning to the Umbrian countryside below Assisi for a beautiful bike ride. The route follows the "olive grove way" along the eastern slopes of Monte Subasio to the olive oil mill at Frantoio di Spello, where a tasting introduces you to the extraordinary oil produced from these ancient trees. We ride through Spello — pausing to see Pinturicchio's brilliant frescoes in the Church of Sant'Andrea — and continue across the Umbrian valley to Bevagna, a Roman and medieval town where craftsmen still practice their trades using centuries-old techniques. We then visit a Sagrantino wine estate to taste Umbria's most celebrated and least-exported red.

Lunch is on your own in Assisi, with time to wander this exceptional small city. We then return to Sansepolcro after a full day, with dinner this evening on your own.

Total Ride: 26 km | Mostly flat after initial 10 km of rolling terrain | All on quiet asphalt roads

DAY 5 — Cortona, the Cypress Avenue, and a Renaissance Dinner

Our final full day takes us to Cortona — one of Tuscany's great hilltop cities, with views that stretch across the Val di Chiana toward the edges of the Val d'Orcia. We approach it on foot, ascending from the Sanctuary of Santa Margherita along a cypress-lined avenue, then climbing an ancient Roman road to the ridge above town. The views from the top are among the finest on the entire tour. The trail returns through open meadows and mixed woodland, past the peaceful Franciscan Hermitage of Le Celle, before an urban walking section winds through Cortona's narrow alleys into the historic center. A shorter option skips the final 3 km.

Lunch is on your own in Cortona, followed by a guided walk and free time to explore the shops and streets at your leisure. Then we return to Sansepolcro for the culminating evening of our 30th anniversary celebration, with a farewell dinner and perhaps a toast or two.

Hiking Distance: 11 km | Elevation Gain: 400 m | Short option: skip final 3 km urban section

Arrival & Departure

We will meet at 10:00 AM in the town of Arezzo and shuttle from there to our base of Sansepolcro. Arezzo is on a major north-south train line and is an easy 1.5-hour train ride from Florence and about three hours from Rome, with some faster trains available. Rome is the main airport in Italy. Florence has a large airport but there are no direct flights from the US.

We spend our final night in the town of Sansepolcro and will provide a 40-minute shuttle back to Arezzo. If you depart from either Florence or Rome, you will need to get to the airport from either city center and some flights leave in the morning, so you might end up spending a final night in Italy. One good option is to fly into Florence and out of Rome or vice versa.

Best time to visit

Tuscany can be hot in the summer and the best times to visit are often the shoulder seasons around the hottest months of July and August.

Extending your vacation

We definitely recommend spending two days each in Florence and/or Rome, if you have not visited either city. They are both amazing with much to see and do. If you wish to extend your visit outside these cities, a major decision is whether to travel in Italy by train (best for the larger cities) or car (better for rural areas). If you have never visited Tuscany and Umbria, both are amazing regions well worth your time with much to explore outside the region we will visit.

Ability Level

This Adventure is rated For All Abilities. While some of the hiking and biking could be considered Moderate, all have shorter options available and you can also choose to opt out of any activity you wish.

Type of people who will enjoy this tour

We have targeted this experience to Zephyr alumni, both those who have traveled with us to Italy before and want to spend time in Giovanni's home town and those who have not done so yet. It is a celebration of all our lives rather than just a travel vacation.

Changes to Your Itinerary

While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience.
