Georgia & the Caucasus Mountains Hiking Adventure

September 25 - October 4, 2025

“Absolutely fantastic mix of activity, culture, socializing, food and drink… a really well thought out itinerary … would definitely recommend.

2024 Georgia Adventure participant

There have been pro-democracy and pro-Europe protests at night in Tbilisi and some other cities. These have limited affect on the daily lives of tourists and locals at this point. In fact, the US State Department still has Georgia at Level 1 (standard) on its travel advisory scale, simply advising people to avoid protest areas at night. Our tour is still on, the situation will change, we will continue to monitor what is happening, and we will not run this tour if we believe it to be unsafe, in which case registered travelers will receive their money back. We strongly support the protesters and you will too once you have been immersed in Georgian culture.

The country of Georgia is indeed captivating but it isn’t easy to pin down exactly why because the small country is also complex and has more to offer than other countries its size. We’ll try to explain below why we think Georgia is so alluring and our Georgia and the Caucasus Mountains Hiking Adventure is such an amazing trip.

  • Gallery of Georgia

Why Georgia?

Georgia was a travelers’ secret only a decade ago. While the word is out to adventurous travelers, you will still likely be the only one of your friends who will ever visit the country. We love that exploratory aspect of this tour but also enjoy the comforts of nice hotels, excellent food, and delicious wine that Georgia has to offer. So what is it about Georgia we find so captivating?

  • It has a fascinating culture that is in part due to its location on the border of Europe and Asia.
  • The Caucasus Mountains provide an amazing playground and scenic backdrop for hikers.
  • Georgian cuisine is delicious and flavorful; it is also one of the top cuisines of the world for those who love vegetables as they come in abundance and with flavor at almost every meal.
  • It has the oldest wine making tradition in the world at 8,000 years and produces delicious wines now.
  • The capital city of Tbilisi is easy to navigate, provides modern comforts, and is a great base from which to see the rest of the country.
  • The country and its people are western-oriented, welcoming, and friendly to travelers
  • The country is safe – we have never felt or experienced any sort of threat when visiting

Georgia’s Pride

But most of all, if we had to pick one aspect of Georgia we find the most romantically alluring, it is the pride of its people in their country.

Georgians are pride of their incredibly long history just as much as they are proud of their recent ability to throw off the Soviet yoke and Russian aggression. They are proud of their stable democracy and vibrant economy. They are proud of their language, which is only spoken by Georgians. They are immensely proud of their food, which is delicious, and their wine, which is currently fascinating winemakers throughout the world. In short, the Georgians are very proud of their country and rightfully proud to show it to travelers.

And when we visit Georgia, we soak up this pride by the locals and internalize some of it ourselves. We end up departing Georgia with full hearts and more than just typical travel memories. It seems a piece of Georgia stays with travelers even when they are back home.

Our Georgia Hiking Adventure

Our Georgia Hiking Adventure is ten days and includes several distinct parts:

  • The capital Tbilisi, which is a vibrant and fun city
  • The Ateni Valley at the base of the Caucasus Mountains, where we visit a fortress and a monastery, hike to a waterfall, and stay in a winery guesthouse
  • The mountain town of Stepantsminda, the premier mountain town in the country, which is our base for several hikes above the tree line as well as dinner in the home of a mountainside villager
  • Telavai and Sighnaghi in the Georgian wine country, where we hike in two national parks, eat a wine-pairing dinner at a local winery, and walk the battlements of Sighnaghi’s city walls

Hiking is the core of the adventure, with half day hikes planned most days. We have the ability to adapt each hike to our group and to offer shorter and longer options most days. In addition, we stop at fortresses, monasteries, and towns rich in culture. We’ll also visit a few wineries, taste beers at a local brewery, eat lunch in a private home in a very small mountain town, and participate in a cooking workshop.

Our Local Guide

We have an amazing local guide, Salome, who leads us on this trip. Salome has been leading hiking and wine tours in Georgia for eight years and seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the country’s history, culture, and food. She is also wonderfully polite, invariably happy, and willing to share her opinions on any question you have about Georgia. When not guiding in the high season, Salome is doing her residency to become an emergency room surgeon!

“Salome provided such an amazing experience that I now know that I have a much better understanding of the country… her passion and pride for not only Georgia but for the work she was doing guiding us through the adventure was really top notch! I was totally amazed by her knowledge of each place along the journey but also at the wonderful sense of humor and excitement to share each of these places with us, it was truly special! Plus, her ability to translate fluently and on the fly was incredible to observe and be a part of.” – 2024 Georgia Adventure Participant

Day 1

You can arrive at any time of the day today into Tbilisi's international airport and can easily take a taxi or Bolt (like Uber) to our hotel. If you wish, we can book you a private driver at an extra cost who will meet you with your name on a sign for the short shuttle into Tbilisi. Once there, you can check into our modern hotel in a quiet section of old town Tbilisi. As some flights get in late, we have nothing on the official agenda. However, for those in the city, we will meet for dinner in our hotel's restaurant for an excellent first taste of the delicious Georgian cuisine.

Day 2

Tbilisi

We meet at 1:00 PM in our downtown Tbilisi hotel. We'll start with introductions and an overview of the tour and this is when you will meet Salome, our incredible local guide. We'll take off for a three-hour guided walking tour of "Old Tbilisi", a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its ancient architecture and interesting mix of cultures. We'll stop at the Metekhi church, Sulfur Baths district, Narikala Fortress, Old Caravanserai (where caravan traders used to stay - Tbilisi was a stop on the Silk Road), the Sioni cathedral, and the Anchiskhati basilica. We'll finish the walking tour at Ghvino Underground, a famous meeting spot that specializes in "natural" Georgian wines, for a tasting. This evening we'll have dinner at a popular local restaurant where you'll have the chance to enjoy a Georgian meal picked out by our local guide as well as delicious Georgian wines or craft beer.

Day 3

Uplistsikhe Cave TownWe'll enjoy breakfast again at the hotel and then check out and depart Tbilisi. We'll have a drive of about 1.5 hours to the Uplistsikhe Cave Town, an entire town of cave dwellings. With origins dating to the 1st century BCE (that is old!), the area is now on the UNESCO world heritage list. We then stop for a hike on a relatively untraveled path to a small waterfall, where we'll eat our trail lunches provided by the hotel. Afterwards, we'll visit the Ateni Sioni Church, a beautiful stone 7th-century Georgian Orthodox church, and walk from there to our guesthouse. We'll enjoy dinner on the property, as well as meeting the owner Nico who will be proud to present us with his wines made on property.

Day 4

Truso ValleyAfter breakfast we will check out and depart Ateni for the town of Stepantsminda. We'll first stop en route at the Ananuri architectural complex, a fairy tale-like castle complex on the Aragvi River. We'll then head to the Truso Valley for a three to four-hour hike including a trail lunch. The Truso Valley has a number of abandoned fortresses and villages that complement its scenic beauty. We'll visit the Truso Travertines National Monument, a stunning flow of bright white limestone that contrasts with the green hills. Our home for the evening will be in the town of Stepantsminda, a small mountain town, at the Rooms Hotel Kazbegi. Dinner will be at a local cafe en route and then we can enjoy the amazing views of the huge mountain just across the valley from our hotel windows.

Day 5

Gergeti Trinity ChurchToday you do not need to check out, as we'll be spending a full day in the Stepantsminda area. Stepantsminda is also known as Kazbegi and is the main town for hiking on or climbing up Mount Kazbek. Standing at 5,054 meters or 16,581 feet, Mount Kazbek is the third highest peak in the country (and 2,000 feet higher than any mountain in the Continental United States.) We'll start with a 90-minute hike to the Gergeti Trinity Church, a 14th century building perched on a hill with amazing views of the surrounding area. The return route takes us past the Gergeti Tower, an abandoned stone fort. Those eager for more hiking can continue up Mount Kazbek on the route mountaineers take to the summit. We'll add another short hike, this time to the Gveleti Waterfalls, a pair of falls that are made more impressive by the rugged surroundings and the wildflower smells in the area. We'll then drive to the tiny mountain village of Tsdo in Dariali Gorge. There, we'll participate in a cooking class with a local villager who will teach us to make Khinkali (meat dumplings) in her home. We'll then sit down with the head of the family for a traditional Georgian feast, including multiple toasts of the gentleman's cognac for those who wish it, and an incredible opportunity to ask questions (translated by our local guide) of a real Georgian. Lunch finishes quite late and so dinner is on your own tonight.

Day 6

Mount ChaukhiAfter breakfast, we'll check out and depart. Our route will take us to the spectacular Sno Valley, where we'll begin a hike from the village of Juta. One of the highest villages in Europe, Juta is off the beaten path and for years the ethnic Khevsur people who lived there have kept their own customs and dialect. Our three to four-hour hike will take us onto the slopes of Mount Chaukhi, one of the largest massifs (a sort of mountain chain) in the Caucasus with multiple peaks in the 11,000 to 13,000-foot range, each named for a Georgian poet or artist. We'll have lunch in a mountainide cafe before continuing by vehicle to the Kakheti region: Georgia's wine country! En route we'll stop at the Kvetera Church and/or Alaverdi Cathedral (from the 11th century) if time permits. Arriving to Telavi, a small city of 20,000 inhabitants, we will check into our hotel and then switch things up by eating Italian in the hotel's continental European restaurant.

Day 7

Tsinandali EstateWe are again on the road today and so will check out after breakfast. We'll then drive 90 minutes to the Lagodekh Nature Preserve, a high-altitude national park full of wide open spaces, craggy mountains, snow-fed lakes, and waterfalls. We'll hike on the Rocho (Black Grouse) Waterfall trail, a beautiful path through the forest and along the river that comes out from the falls. You have the option of 4 KM, 7 KM, or 10 KM round trip. After the hike we'll drive to the town of Sighnaghi, in the center of the wine country, and check into our hotel. This afternoon and evening we will spend at Lost Ridge Inn, Brewery, and Ranch for a cooking class, craft beer tasting, and dinner.

Day 8

Today we will drive to Vashlovani National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The park is tucked into a curve in the Alazani River, which forms the border with Azerbaijan. This will be very different hiking from our previous treks as we will be in a semi-desert ecosystem, similar to the Badlands of our South Dakota. We'll hike through wide open spaces and past eroded sandstone formations in the foothills of the much larger northern Caucasus Mountains. Few tourists make it out to this area of the country, giving it an isolated feel. There are multiple hiking options in the park and we'll eat our packed lunches on the trail. After returning to Sighnaghi, we'll have some time on our own and then will visit Pheasant's Tears Winery for a tasting and dinner accompanied by the traditional Georgian polyphonic or "overtone" singing, an exotic style where the singer changes the shape of the vocal tract to produce a unique sound

Day 9

SighnaghiSince we did not have time yesterday, this morning after breakfast we'll take a walking tour of Sighnaghi, including walking on the battlements of the walls that surround the city. We then head on our final shuttle, back towards Tbilisi. En route we will stop at Tedo’s Marani, a home-based winery. Tedo will show us his qvevri where the winemaking takes place and his cellar where he stores his bottles. We'll sit down to a traditional supra, or banquet dinner, complete with toasting. This might be your favorite meal of the trip. After a long lunch, we'll finish the drive to Tbilisi where you'll have a few free hours before we meet for our final farewell dinner.

Day 10

Tbilisi CityToday is departure day. You can depart for the airport at any time needed to catch your flight.

Trip Accommodations

NIGHTS 1, 2, & 9: Hotel Makmani / Tbilisi
This four-star hotel is perfectly located in the heart of the Old Town in Georgia's capital. The hotel has been recently updated and features modern comforts and an enchanting internal courtyard. It gets superb ratings from travelers, including a 9.3 rating on Booking.com (9.7 for its location.) If you arrive to Georgia early, you can book an extra night at this hotel.

NIGHT 3: Solo Grande  / Ateni
A peaceful getaway right in Ateni amidst picturesque mountain and forest landscapes. The hotel features a range of amenities, including a seasonal outdoor pool, and sauna.

NIGHTS 4 & 5: Rooms Hotel Kazbegi / Stepantsminda
The Hotel Kazbegi's defining feature is the views from the rooms. With a front terrace that stretches the length of the hotel, you'll have prime views of 16,581-foot Mount Kazbegi and its snow capped peak. Interestingly enough, the hotel was a "sanitorium" during the era of the Soviet Union when Georgia was a "socialist republic". But the hotel has been upgraded and modernized, with wood paneling throughout and a focus on modern comforts.

NIGHT 6: Holiday Inn Telavi / Telavi
This is another four-star, highly rated hotel. Yes, it is a member of the Holiday Inn chain - but nothing like the Holiday Inns you know. The hotel is situated in the center of Telavi, steps from the King Erekle II Palace. Telavi itself is situated in the heart of the Georgian wine region. The hotel offers a restaurant on the top floor featuring Italian cuisine (a nice change for us) as well as an outdoor pool.

NIGHTS 7 & 8: Kabadoni Hotel / Sighnaghi
The Kabadoni Hotel is situated in the heart of Sighnaghi and gives you easy access to the shops of the town. The hotel overlooks vineyards and the Alazani Valley below. The interior of Hotel Kabadoni is a mixture of art nouveau, ancient Georgian, and eastern motifs - an eclectic mix - but the comforts are modern.
