Arizona Pickleball Adventure

October 13 - 17, 2024

It’s just super fun.

bill gates, microsoft founder and pickleball player

Our Arizona Pickleball Adventure is a great combination of a cute small town, southwest cuisine & Arizona wines, and activities including hiking, biking, kayaking, and a jeep tour through the Red Rocks of Sedona. Plus two hours of fun pickleball per day.

About Pickleball

Pickleball is an amazing game with many advantages:

  • Super fast learning curve – new players can pick it up and have fun in minutes
  • The game is highly social and supportive, with more experienced players readily welcoming newer players to the game
  • Promotes both physical and mental health

This sounds like the recipe for a perfect active tour. On our Arizona Pickleball Adventure we:

  • Have eight hours of play over four days at Espire Sports, a pickleball complex with indoor and outdoor courts
  • Encourage players from novice to advanced. Even if you are new to pickleball, you will pick it up very quickly. (If you are above a 4.0 in the pickleball rating scale, this might not be advanced enough for you.)
  • Focus on fun and learning. Note this is not about improving your competitive pickleball game for tournament play.
  • Rent multiple courts so everyone can play at the same time.
  • Rotate play so everyone gets to play with everyone else at least once, although we will put players with similar skills on the same court together most often.
  • Invite pickleball pros to provide formal and informal instruction twice during the week.
  • Welcome Diana and Carl Landau to join us on this tour, co-authors of Pickleball for Dummies.

Prescott, Arizona

Our tour takes place in the small city of Prescott, Arizona. Located two hours north of the major airport in Phoenix and situated at an altitude of 5,374 feet, Prescott keeps cool during the hot months in Arizona. The city of 45,000 people has a fantastic, walkable downtown; excellent food and drink options featuring local wines and southwestern cuisine; an interesting Western history; and lots to do in the area including hiking, biking, and kayaking.

Prescott is located a short drive from the Verde Valley, Arizona’s prime wine region. The city is also located one hour twenty minutes from famous Sedona, which we visit one afternoon on the tour.

Other Activities

This tour is not just about pickleball. In fact, while we play pickleball each day, we also have the opportunity (everything is optional!) to do the following:

  • Take an historical walk through Prescott
  • Visit the wine region city of Cottonwood and famous Sedona
  • Take an off road jeep adventure through the famous Red Rocks country of Sedona
  • Hike at Red Rocks State Park and the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park
  • Kayak or e-bike at nearby Watson Lake
  • Visit Merkin winery, Belfry Brewery, and Superstition Meadery

Your Arizona Pickleball Vacation!

You need not be fanatic about pickleball or good at the sport to enjoy this tour. The pickleball is a fun and social way to get exercise and meet your fellow tour participants. We then spend half our days enjoying the lovely mountain weather and scenery of northern Arizona.

DAY 1

We meet after lunch at Phoenix International Airport and shuttle the one hour, 45 minutes to Prescott. Upon arriving we check into our suites at the Hassayampa Inn and then gather for happy hour. We'll meet each other and hear from Diana and Carl Landau, co-authors of Pickleball for Dummies. Diana and Carl will relate the crazy history of pickleball, discuss the all-important pickleball social scene, show how to find courts anywhere in the the world, demystify the "Kitchen" rules, and share the Ten Common Pickleball Mistakes and how to fix them. We'll then gather in the hotel's Peacock Dining Room for our first taste of delicious Southwestern cuisine.

DAY 2

This morning after breakfast is our first pickleball session. We shuttle the short distance to our dedicated pickleball courts at Espire Sports and meet our pros. This morning is about getting to know each other on the court. We'll have some instruction from the pros as a group, some instruction when we break into smaller groups based on ability level, and then finish with for-fun games. We'll set the tone this first day, making sure everyone is having fun and getting the exercise they want without the stress they do not need. It is then back to our hotel with time to shower and eat lunch on your own in Prescott. In the afternoon we'll do a short shuttle to Watson Lake with an option to either kayak on the lake with its surreal, beautiful landscape of granite boulders surrounding the deep blue of the lake. Or you can choose to jump on an e-bike and bicycle on a gravel path with stunning views of the lake as you cruise through the northern Arizona landscape. This evening we'll have a tapas dinner at El Gato Azul with an optional after-dinner drink at the Palace Saloon on historic Whiskey Row, which with a founding date of 1877 is both the oldest operating bar and business in the state.

DAY 3

This morning we have pickleball session number two. Again we'll meet up with our pro instructors but this time we'll focus more on playing games, having the instructors integrate into games to give us live on-the-spot coaching while not reducing the fun. By the end of the two-hour session you will very likely have improved your game - regardless of where you started - while deepening your appreciation for why pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country. Again we'll have time to return to the hotel and shower. After this we will shuttle 1.5 hours to the famous and exotic town of Sedona, home to red rocks scenery (made of sandstone) and equally famous (or infamous) spiritual vortexes. You will have time to eat lunch on your own and in the afternoon you'll have four options: stroll and shop the streets of Sedona, participate in an Art Gallery Walk, hike at Red Rock State Park, or do an off-road jeep tour through the red rocks canyons. In the late afternoon it is back towards home with a stop in Cottonwood, for a wine or beer tasting followed by dinner at Merkin winery's Trattoria.

DAY 4

After breakfast at the hotel we are off to our third session of pickleball. This time it is just fun and all games as we play a rotating schedule of games. Most of our games are doubles, and so we can easily place people on teams that balance out. You'll get to partner with and play against everyone over the course of the week. (Note we generally don't keep couples together the whole time.) You will also have the option to try singles pickleball, which is a much bigger workout but also lots of fun. We'll then return to the hotel for showers and lunch on your own in Prescott. In the afternoon you can choose to stay in town and optionally join an historical walking tour of Prescott or drive south to the Granite Mountain Hotshots State Memorial State Park, where you can do a 1.5-mile or 5.7-mile hike to the fascinating memorial to wildfire fighters who lost their lives here. In the evening we'll enjoy our final dinner, at delicious Farm Provisions restaurant, which focuses on using local Arizona products.

DAY 5

We have a final morning together with a final pickleball session. This will be a for-fun tournament in which we divide our group into teams that balance skill levels. So if you are a novice player (or just still improving) we'll pair you with a more experienced player. Winner gets ... bragging rights! It is then back to the hotel to shower, change, and grab a quick early lunch before heading back to Phoenix airport.

Trip Accommodations

ALL NIGHTS >> HASSAYAMPA INN / PRESCOTT, AZ

Hassayampa InnThe story of the historic Hassayampa Inn is truly unique. During the “roaring twenties,” El Paso architect Henry Trost was challenged by a group of residents to design a grand hotel in Prescott. Hundreds of Prescott citizens bought shares into the project at $1 each and the result was the construction of a stunning red brick building, completed in 1927, that would serve as the cornerstone of downtown. Back then, it was known as the Hassayampa Hotel.

These warm and welcoming accommodations were named after the Hassayampa River located north of Prescott, which mysteriously sinks beneath the surface for much of its 100-mile journey. The Apache word “Hassayampa” loosely translates as “the river that loses itself” is a fitting moniker for a hotel that was designed to be a place where patrons can emerge refreshed and relaxed.

Today, the historic Hassayampa Inn remains an anchor in the community. The building is included in the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the Historic Hotels of America. But most of all, this red-brick hotel is as charming today as it was more than 90 years ago.

We spend all four nights in the Hassayampa Inn, enjoying the two-room Suites the hotel offers.

  • Welcome happy hour and visits to a winery and brewery are included.
  • NOT INCLUDED Beverages not listed above, desserts, lunches, gratuities to your guides, personal expenses and travel to and from the destination.
Weather

With its higher altitude, Prescott keeps a lot cooler during the hot months than nearby Phoenix. Having said that, daytime highs in June, July, and August still average in the upper 80s. We like the shoulder seasons of April (average high 67 degrees), May (77), September (82), and October (72). July and August also tend to be the months with the most rain with only two or three days per month of precipitation during our preferred shoulder seasons. So expect clear skies and warm temperatures with potentially cool evenings.

Extending Your Stay

If you wish to spend any time in the Phoenix area, arriving one day early is a great idea as it will eliminate any travel concerns. Our favorite spots in the area are Old Town Scottsdale and the university town of Tempe, both of which are relatively close to the airport. If you wish to spend more time in the area, you have a number of great options. Tucson provides some true Sonoran desert scenery. Flagstaff is a fun college and outdoors town farther north from Prescott. And the Grand Canyon is only a couple hours away.

Changes to Your Itinerary

While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience. If there is any one experience that is going to make or break your trip, please discuss this with us in advance! We will attempt to keep our website itinerary as current as possible and communicate any major changes with you in the weeks prior to the tour.
