About Pickleball
Pickleball is an amazing game with many advantages:
- Super fast learning curve – new players can pick it up and have fun in minutes
- The game is highly social and supportive, with more experienced players readily welcoming newer players to the game
- Promotes both physical and mental health

This sounds like the recipe for a perfect active tour. On our Arizona Pickleball Adventure we:

- Have eight hours of play over four days at Espire Sports, the largest indoor pickleball facility in the world (outdoor courts also available)
- Encourage players from novice to advanced. Even if you are new to pickleball, you will pick it up very quickly. (If you are above a 4.0 in the pickleball rating scale, this will not be advanced enough for you.)
- Focus on fun and learning. Note this is not about improving your competitive pickleball game for tournament play.
- Rent multiple courts so everyone can play at the same time.
- Rotate play so everyone gets to play with everyone else at least once.
- Hire pickleball pros to provide formal and informal instruction twice during the week.
Prescott, Arizona
Our tour takes place in the small city of Prescott, Arizona. Located two hours north of the major airport in Phoenix and situated at an altitude of 5,374 feet, Prescott is much cooler during the hot months in Arizona and is usually beautiful in the non-summer seasons. The city of 45,000 people has a fantastic, walkable downtown; excellent food and drink options featuring local wines and southwestern cuisine; an interesting Western history; and lots to do in the area including hiking, biking, and lake kayaking.
Other Activities
This tour is not just about pickleball. In fact, while we play pickleball each day, you also have the opportunity (everything is optional!) to do the following:
- Take an historical walk through Prescott
- Visit the wine region city of Cottonwood and the almost-extinct mining town of Jerome
- Learn about the original inhabitants of the area at Tuzigoot National Monument
- Hike the trails of Dead Horse State Park
- Kayak or e-bike at nearby Watson Lake
- Visit Merkin winery or Belfry Brewery for a tasting
Your Arizona Pickleball Vacation!
You need not be fanatic about pickleball or good at the sport to enjoy this tour. The pickleball is a fun and social way to get exercise and meet your fellow tour participants. We then spend half our days enjoying the lovely mountain weather and scenery of northern Arizona.

DAY 1
We meet after lunch at Phoenix International Airport and shuttle the one hour, 45 minutes to Prescott. Upon arriving we drive directly to our dedicated pickleball courts at Espire Sports and meet our pros. This first session is about getting to know each other on the court. We'll have some instruction from the pros as a group, some instruction when we break into smaller groups based on ability level, and then finish with for-fun games. We'll set the tone this first day, making sure everyone is having fun and getting the exercise they want without the stress they do not need. We'll then check into our suites at the Hassayampa Inn, have time for showers, and then walk across the street for a Southwestern casual dinner at Red, White, and Brew.
DAY 2
This morning breakfast is in the historic Peacock Dining Room of the hotel. We'll then shuttle the short distance to Espire Sports and our pickleball for the day. The plan is to again have instruction followed by fun games. It is then back to our hotel with time to shower and eat lunch on your own in Prescott. In the afternoon we'll do a short shuttle to Watson Lake with an option to kayak on the lake with its surreal, beautiful landscape of granite boulders surrounding the deep blue of the lake. Or you can choose to jump on an e-bike and bicycle on a gravel path with stunning views of the lake as you cruise through the northern Arizona landscape. This evening we'll have taco night at La Planchada restaurant.
DAY 3
This morning after breakfast we have pickleball session number three. This time we'll focus more on playing games, having our instructor integrate into games to give us live on-the-spot coaching while not reducing the fun. By the end of the two-hour session you will very likely have improved your game - regardless of where you started - while deepening your appreciation for why pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country. Again we'll have time to return to the hotel and shower. After this we will shuttle a little over an hour to the historic mining village of Jerome. Jerome boomed during its mining days, almost busted into oblivion, and has been revised by its residents to be a cute small towns with shops and restaurants. You'll have time to wander and eat lunch on your own. In the late afternoon we continue on to Old Town Cottonwood and a visit to Tuzigoot National Monument, where you can learn about the original inhabitants of this region. We'll then sneak in a wine or beer tasting followed by dinner at Merkin winery's Trattoria.
DAY 4
After breakfast at the hotel we are off to our final session of pickleball. This time it is just fun and all games as we play a rotating schedule of games. You'll get to partner with and play against everyone over the course of the week. (Note we don't keep couples together the whole time.) You will also have the option to try singles pickleball, which is a much bigger workout but also lots of fun. We'll then return to the hotel for showers and lunch on your own in Prescott. In the afternoon you can choose to join an historical walking tour of Prescott (Wyatt Earp, Virgil Earp, and Doc Holiday were all residents) or do a two-mile hike at Thumb Butte Recreation Area, Prescott's most visible natural landmark. We'll then meet for an optional pre-dinner drink at the Palace Saloon on historic Whiskey Row, which with a founding date of 1877 is both the oldest operating bar and business in the state of Arizona. In the evening we'll enjoy our final dinner, at delicious Farm Provisions restaurant, which focuses on using local Arizona products.
DAY 5
Today is departure day! We'll have an optional pre-breakfast walk through Prescott's Victorian district to a viewpoint above town. It is then back to the hotel for breakfast with time to shower and pack before heading back to Phoenix airport.

ALL NIGHTS >> HASSAYAMPA INN / PRESCOTT, AZ
The story of the historic Hassayampa Inn is truly unique. During the “roaring twenties,” El Paso architect Henry Trost was challenged by a group of residents to design a grand hotel in Prescott. Hundreds of Prescott citizens bought shares into the project at $1 each and the result was the construction of a stunning red brick building, completed in 1927, that would serve as the cornerstone of downtown. Back then, it was known as the Hassayampa Hotel.
These warm and welcoming accommodations were named after the Hassayampa River located north of Prescott, which mysteriously sinks beneath the surface for much of its 100-mile journey. The Apache word “Hassayampa” loosely translates as “the river that loses itself” is a fitting moniker for a hotel that was designed to be a place where patrons can emerge refreshed and relaxed.
Today, the historic Hassayampa Inn remains an anchor in the community. The building is included in the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the Historic Hotels of America. But most of all, this red-brick hotel is as charming today as it was more than 90 years ago.
We spend all four nights in the Hassayampa Inn, enjoying the two-room Suites the hotel offers.

Weather
With its higher altitude, Prescott keeps a lot cooler during the hot months than nearby Phoenix. Having said that, daytime highs in June, July, and August still average in the upper 80s. We like the shoulder seasons of March (average high of 60 degrees), April (67), May (77), September (82), October (72), and November (61). July and August also tend to be the months with the most rain with only two or three days per month of precipitation during our preferred shoulder seasons. So expect clear skies and warm temperatures with potentially cool evenings.
Extending Your Stay
If you wish to spend any time in the Phoenix area, arriving one day early is a great idea as it will eliminate any travel concerns. Our favorite spots in the area are Old Town Scottsdale and the university town of Tempe, both of which are relatively close to the airport. If you wish to spend more time in the area, you have a number of great options. Tucson provides some true Sonoran desert scenery. Flagstaff is a fun college and outdoors town farther north from Prescott. Sedona is famous for its red rocks. And the Grand Canyon is only a couple hours away.
Changes to Your Itinerary
While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience. If there is any one experience that is going to make or break your trip, please discuss this with us in advance! We will attempt to keep our website itinerary as current as possible and communicate any major changes with you in the weeks prior to the tour.
