Portugal surprised me in all the best ways. On a recent scouting trip for our upcoming Portugal hiking tour, I was blown away by the country’s natural beauty, warm hospitality, and delicious cuisine. This new itinerary is designed with adventure and culture in mind. It takes us from the lush forests of Sintra to the sun-soaked beaches of the Algarve.
Starting in Sintra: Fairytale Forests & Hilltop Palaces
We begin in Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage town tucked into lush green hills just outside Lisbon. Sintra is pure magic, with whimsical palaces, Moorish castles, and mysterious gardens. We’ll visit the stunning Monserrate Palace, and then head out for a cliffside hike in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The trail winds past Portugal’s westernmost point, Cabo da Roca, to wild beaches like Praia da Ursa and Praia da Adraga, with panoramic ocean views and waves crashing far below.

Cascais: Coastal Charm Meets Seaside Chic
After Sintra, we hike south along the Atlantic to the stylish beach town of Cascais. Once a sleepy fishing village, Cascais is now a relaxed escape full of cobblestone streets, oceanfront promenades, and excellent seafood. You can stroll along the waterfront or kick off your shoes at Tamariz Beach before dinner in the old town.
Arrábida Natural Park & the Wine Country Roads
On our way south, we stop to stretch our legs in Arrábida Natural Park. The Park is home to cork forests, limestone cliffs, and peaceful hiking trails like the Rota dos Moinhos (Windmill Route).

Lagos & the Algarve: Golden Cliffs and Ocean Breezes
Our final days are spent in the sunny southern region of the Algarve. We’ll be basing ourselves in Lagos, one of Portugal’s most charming beach towns. From here, we hike the jaw-dropping Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, often ranked among Europe’s best coastal walks. Picture sandstone arches, turquoise coves, sea caves, and lookout points that take your breath away.
You’ll also walk from Praia da Luz back into Lagos along a peaceful seaside path, with chances to stop for a swim, grab a drink, or simply soak in the scenery. Our time in Lagos includes a relaxing boat ride to the sea caves of Ponta da Piedade, a local port wine tasting, and plenty of opportunities to unwind at the beach or pool.
Each day brings something new: palaces, peaceful beach towns, port wine tastings, and unforgettable food. Think grilled seafood, flaky pastéis de nata, and rooftop sunset views.
