This past week we had our annual family reunion, here where I live in Colorado. 21 of us gathered for three days and nights of game playing, eating, and activities.
Before the reunion, my immediate family gathered in Utah for our own small vacation. Nine of us (my parents, two brothers, and their families) did a four-day rafting trip down the Green River in Colorado and Utah.
This trip was my dad’s choice. At 81, he isn’t hiking quite as much as he used to but is still quite active and enjoys a few thrills on the river. We selected a river that would provide Class III rapids, which are suitable for most ages and, more importantly, levels of adventure.
We went with a local outfitter and the trip was excellent: very good guides, excellent meals, and a nice group. We enjoyed some rapids, including the one that produced the photo above where we accidentally hit the “hole” we were supposed to avoid. We kayaked in inflatable sit-on-top “duckies” when the rapids weren’t too big, which precipitated quite a bit of waterfight mayhem, kayaks versus rafts. We hiked a few times and even dunked ourselves in three separate waterfalls, including one (see photos below) where folks on top could dam the water with their behinds, stop the water, and then let it come shooting down on our heads in one big outpouring.
Waiting for the water:
The best part of the trip, for me, was spending four days floating through amazing scenery cut by the Green River through Dinosaur National Monument, with not a house or other structure in sight. How often are you anywhere that you can not see a house or car for four days? It was a very pleasant trip and we’d love to set up something like this for our Zephyr travelers.
Sounds like a wonderful vacation. I love reading about people’s family trips and reunions.
We experienced a butt dam on our Yampa River trip. i wonder if you were at a spot where the two rivers come together??
Hmm. It is a good question, Cindy. It was in that area where the Yampa joins the Green but I can’t remember if it was after that happened or not. Possibly we were at the same butt dam!
