RETURN TO Slovenia Hike Adventure
DAY 1: Welcome to Slovenia! You have the option of meeting your Zephyr guides at the Ljubljana airport (LJU) or in the lobby of our host hotel in the early afternoon. After short introductions, we will head out on an exploratory walk to the Vintagar Gorge, one of the most extraordinary natural wonders in Slovenia. Be sure to bring a rain jacket, as we will be walking on boardwalks through narrow and dramatic ravines, above the rushing Radovna River, and may get a little wet! We return to the hotel to dry off and change before meeting on the beautiful lawn near Lake Bled and walking to our fabulous welcome dinner in the medieval Bled Castle.
Daily Distance: 2 – 8 miles
DAY 2: After a hearty breakfast, we will pack our lunches and head to Lake Bohinj to begin our hike along the crystal blue stream of the Mostnica Gorge. In some places, the stream bed is extremely narrow and the gorges are up to 65 feet high! We’ll stop for lunch while gazing upon a breathtaking waterfall. Afterwards, a cable car will take us up Mt. Vogel to a view that offers spectacular views of Lake Bohinj. You have the option to explore several trails around the top of the mountain or even take a trail that will lead you all the way down. We’ll climb into our shuttle back to Bled and enjoy a lovely dinner at the hotel.
Daily Distance: 4 miles in the morning and 2 – 10 miles in the afternoon
DAY 3: We start our morning with a shuttle to Velika Planina, a magical plateau, and the site of one of Europe’s few surviving high mountain herdsmen’s villages, where traditional Alpine herdsmen’s culture is still alive. This scenic high mountain plateau, part of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, is famous for its stunning natural beauty. Its landscape is characterized by vast pastures and numerous karsts. We’ll have a multitude of hiking options here today before or after an authentic shepherd’s lunch – with things like sour milk and žganci (buckwheat mush), homemade cheese, jota (bean and sauerkraut hotpot), ričet (barley stew), goulash, buckwheat žganci, or rolled dumplings with cottage cheese (štruklji). On the way back to Bled, we’ll have the option to visit a local beekeeper for a presentation and honey tasting. To end our day, we’ll visit the medieval town of Radovljica, which boasts one of the best-preserved town structures in Slovenia with houses dating from 15th and 16th century.
Daily Distance: flexible mileage
DAY 4: This morning we will pack up and head to our next location – Bovec! We’ll enjoy a scenic drive over Slovenia’s highest mountain passes, the Vrsic Pass (5,285 feet). After, we’ll stretch our legs and hike through the Trenta Valley to the source of the impossibly blue Soca River. We’ll continue on our way and check into our hotel, where we’ll stay for the rest of the trip. The afternoon is left open to do whatever you please. A few options include visiting an award-winning WWI museum, ziplining, biking, or even tandem paragliding. Depending on what you choose, dinner will be back at our hotel or on your own.
Daily Distance: 2 – 4 miles
DAY 5: Today, we’ll start with a splash by heading out to the Soca River for a fun morning of rafting. After a wild ride, we’ll go back to the hotel to freshen up and grab lunch on your own. In the afternoon, we take in a slight change of scenery and hike through the Brda vineyards with a stop at the Bjana Winery, the best sparkling wine maker in Slovenia! To cap off such a lovely trip, we will enjoy a five-course farewell dinner and wine tasting at the Kbaj Winery (one of the top 100 wineries in the world).
Daily Distance: 1 – 3 miles
DAY 6: On our last morning, we set out on one final hike along the incredible Soca River Trail. You’ll have time to shower and change before we check out. We will then shuttle everyone back to the Ljubljana airport where we will say our farewells. You can then catch your flight home or continue on to your next destination.
Daily Distance: 2 – 5 miles
