The Dolomites are a fantastic mountain range in northern Italy near the border of Austria. The snow-capped mountains are breathtaking and the green valleys below are dotted with wooden homes that look like they belong in Switzerland. You can even find cows with bells clanking in the high meadows.
Yet this is still Italy and the food and culture have a wonderful mixture of Italian and Germanic influences. It’s fun to eat there but things run on time!
We are very excited to offer a new seven-day Dolomites Biking Adventure in this area of Italy. I personally scouted out the area probably ten years ago for an inline skating tour, which we decided not to run (although would still consider for the future). The area was so absorbing it has remained in the back of my mind and when the opportunity came to run a bike tour there along with our local guide Giovanni, we jumped at the chance.
Our tour starts with a two-hour shuttle from famous Venice, allowing you to fly in to and visit that city. We head straight for the high mountains, with a first night’s rest in the classically beautiful mountain town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, host of the 1956 winter Olympics. We then visit (and spend nights in) the towns of San Candido, Bressanone, and Bolzano, all picturesque towns surrounded by mountains.
Sounds like biking in the area would be difficult, doesn’t it? Luckily, local governments have made it a priority to create paved bike paths along the roads lining the area’s valleys, meaning we get all the beauty of the mountains without the arduous biking. Plus, we start the tour in Cortina d’Ampezzo and drop a net 2500 feet to our ending point in Bolzano. Granted, there are hills but this is a reasonable difficulty for many of our bikers.
So what do you think? Ever been to the Dolomites? Ever wanted to go?
This sounds like a fun, relaxing & very safe tour. I love the fact that it utilizes mostly bike paths. I look forward to reviewing this tour in future Trailsnet & ActiveTravelTours blog-posts and tour reviews. It’s the kind of tour that we love introducing to trail lovers and active travelers.
Thanks for putting together an itinerary that involves mostly trails.
Thanks Kevin for your interest in our Dolomites biking tour! I’ll email you separately with more details about our adventure for yo to include in your review!
