New Zealand Multisport & Wine Adventure

“New Zealand is not a small country but a large village.”
Peter Jackson

Sorry, we are no longer offering this tour in 2019.

Whether your sense of adventure is big or small, our New Zealand Adventure is sure to satisfy your wanderlust: majestic forests, inspiring coastlines, great cultural explorations and world-class wines are just a few of the highlights of our nine-day adventure.

We begin in the cosmopolitan capital city of Wellington on the North Island. After a scenic ferry ride through the Marlborough Sounds, we arrive on the wilder South Island and embark on a blissful three-day hike on the breathtakingly scenic Queen Charlotte Track (QCT), through virgin forests and deep bays and coves of the Marlborough Sounds.

We then explore the Marlborough wine region, credited with establishing the New Zealand wine industry and holding half of the country’s total vineyard acreage.  Marlborough’s claim to fame is its Sauvignon Blanc, which is considered by many to be the best in the world!  Our time in wine country includes vineyard hikes with winemakers, biking sweet country roads, a cooking class and, of course, wine tasting!  Upon completion of this journey, you’ll be able to describe in detail what wine from New Zealand means to you.

Before ending in the earthquake-ravaged, yet still beautiful, city of Christchurch, we hike along the rugged coastline near Kaikoura, where we get to see New Zealand fur seals, one of the few native mammals.  When it is all said and done, we bet you’ll be just as head over heels in love with Kiwi life as we are.

Day 1

We’ll meet you at the Museum Art Hotel in New Zealand’s hip capital city of Wellington. We hope you will have had the chance to “coffee up” this morning, as Kiwis will be proud to tell you that their coffee is the very best in the world. After an initial round of hellos, we will depart for a short tour of the city on foot, sampling some of its specialty food items – chocolates, for one! – and learning about the history, culture and landscape. From there, you can choose to take a short hike to get your blood moving or relax in our luxurious hotel. Tonight, we’ll have an introduction to wines from New Zealand’s major wine areas with our dinner.

Day 2

After an early breakfast, we head immediately to the Interisland ferry terminal and enjoy the three-hour ride from the bottom tip of the North Island to the top of the South Island, landing in the quaint seaport of Picton in time for lunch. We’ll hike out to the “Snout,” a rocky promontory overlooking Queen Charlotte Bay to shake off the travel dust and warm up for the three days of hiking ahead of us. Afterward, you can check in to the hotel, explore the waterfront and town, or you might wish to rent a kayak or standup paddle board and explore the bay. We’ll have a late afternoon debriefing from our hiking guide on what to expect on the Queen Charlotte Track and what to pack, then walk to dinner just a few blocks from our hotel.

Day 3

After checking out of our hotel and packing only what we need for our three days of tramping (what kiwis call hiking), the remainder of our luggage will be safely stored until we return and we’ll depart Picton by water taxi, winding through the sound to Ship Cove, Captain Cook’s favorite resting spot in the world. From here, we’ll begin our journey on the Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds. This 71-kilometer trail is one of New Zealand’s most famous and it provides beautiful sea vistas and lodge-to-lodge hiking – we will hike on what we think are the best portions of the trail, almost 50 kilometers of it! A local water taxi transfers our luggage ahead while we carry only our daypacks and start on our 14-kilometer, five-hour walk to Furneaux Lodge. We are rewarded with a beautiful hotel on the shore of Endeavor Inlet and a delicious evening BBQ before snuggling in for the night.

Day 4

We can sleep in a bit and enjoy our beautiful private suites next to the shore, as today is a shorter and much flatter hike: it is only 12.5 kilometers from Furneaux Lodge to Punga Cove, and about four hours of hiking. We will stop along the way to refuel with lunch and capture photos – and still have plenty of time at Punga Cove to enjoy walking on the beach, swimming in the ocean, reading a good book, having a beer at the waterside bar, or perhaps renting a sea kayak for a spin in the bay. You may also choose to continue walking up a steep hill on the QCT for a spectacular view from the ridgetop out to the ocean and beyond before our water taxi collects us at 3 PM and brings us to our next destination: the colorful Lochmara Lodge. You’ll have some time to explore the on-site wildlife sanctuary and a myriad of trails with art installations before joining the group for one of our favorite dinners of the trip. Be sure to visit the glow worms before you go to bed!

Day 5

After fueling up with breakfast, we complete the Queen Charlotte Track by hiking the final, beautiful, 20 kilometers (seven hours) to the end of the trail in Anakiwa, where we take the ferry back to Picton. There, we jump in our private shuttle and drive to Marlborough’s wine country. We celebrate our three-day feat at a multicourse dinner in the luxurious Marlborough Vintners Hotel (our home for the next 3 nights) and meet Hamish, our charming and congenial wine guide who will be with us the next two days.

Day 6

We rest our feet today by jumping on bicycles to visit wine country. You will gain an intense appreciation for the style of wine being made here, the geographical and environmental conditions associated with this wine region and the passion of the people that are responsible for making this world class wine. The cycling is excellent, with nice country roads and little traffic. We’ll first cycle to Te Whare Ra, where the delightful owner Anna will ensure this is one of the highlights of your trip, and then offer a brief stop and tasting at biodynamic winemaker Seresin before heading to a late lunch at Wairau River Wines. In the afternoon, you’ll have the option to simply relax at our wonderful hotel (there are great souvenir shops across the street), or continue cycling with optional stops at funky Moa Brewery, beautiful Cloudy Bay Winery, Allan Scott or Jackson Estate. Tonight we have a tasting and dinner at one of New Zealand’s top restaurants: Hanz Herzog.

Day 7

After a morning hike at Wither Hills Farm Park, we head to Forrest Winery, where the good doctors will tell us what makes their wines so special, then let us taste this for ourselves. Afterward, we have a picnic in their lovely grounds, and stop at a local honey farm before we are off to Hamish & Angie’s wonderful “Dartington Barn” for an intimate cooking class. Yes, wine will be served throughout! To top off the evening, we’ll have an optional stop at a fun local pub on the way home, just in case anybody’s still hungry or thirsty.

Day 8

We check out of our hotel, and as anybody who has been here can tell you, we simply have to stop at Makana Chocolates before heading south to Kaikoura. We also stop along the way for coffee and snacks at “The Store” (known as the best café in Marlborough), then at the Ohau Stream Walk to look at the Fur Seals before arriving in Kaikoura, where you will have the opportunity to hike 10 kilometers on the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway. Here we are bound to see birds and an assortment of sea mammals (dolphin, whale, and seals) along the rugged and beautiful coastline. We will stay in the well-appointed Kaikoura Apartments and enjoy our last night together at one of our favorite restaurants – the Green Dolphin.

Day 9

After enjoying the morning and having a relaxing breakfast, we will shuttle to Christchurch, arriving in time for afternoon departures.

Weather

First, a little geography! New Zealand’s climate is dominated by two main geographical features: the mountains and the sea.  The country is comprised of two main islands (North Island and South Island) and a number of small islands around their perimeter. The South Island has a range of mountains known as the Southern Alps that divide the island along its length, and peaks ascend as high as 12,316 ft (Aoraki / Mt Cook). This makes for a varying climates. Both the North and South Islands of New Zealand enjoy moderate, maritime climate, weather and temperatures.  Let’s focus on the South Island, since that is where we spend most of our trip.

The west coast of the South Island can be extremely wet, while the eastern side can be very dry. We will be spending much of our time on the north coast – straddling both sides of the alps to some extent. Our trip is broken up with time on the coast (cooler) and time in Marlborough, New Zealand’s sunniest region. We will be visiting in early Fall (March).  Along the Queen Charlotte Track, we can expect temperatures in the 50s (Fahrenheit) at night and the 70s during the day. The Fall season has an average of 10 days of rain per month, so we may see a shower or two. Once we head inland to the Marlborough’s wine region, we can expect temperatures to be slightly warmer and drier; we will be arriving just as the wine grape harvest gets into full swing, which is always an exciting time to be near the vineyard!

Because we will be spending much of our time outdoors, and because we can never predict the weather, we encourage you to prepare for both rain and sun, hot and cold!  While we should be able to expect splendid late summer/early fall conditions, there is likely to be occasional showers and rainfall.  Please see our packing list for full details on what to bring.

Extending Your Vacation

There is no shortage of things to do and places to see if you decide to extend your stay in New Zealand after (or before) your Zephyr Adventure (most people feel that traveling that far justifies staying for a longer vacation!).  It is a beautiful country, and we’ll be visiting during a wonderful time of the year.  To start out, see Top 10 lists from one source for both the North Island and the South Island.

South Island: We end our trip in Christchurch, so this is an easy spot to stay an extra day or two. Heavily damaged by a severe earthquake in February of 2011, Christchurch is still a beautiful seaside city worthy of a visit. Christchurch is also the gateway to many other South Island destinations. If you have time to add onto your trip, you may decide to rent a car (best way to get around this rural country) and visit places such as Queenstown (one of the top-rated destinations on the South Island, with a large alpine lake and extreme sport destination of unprecedented beauty) or Milford Sound (hailed by Rudyard Kipling as the “eighth wonder of the world,” the Milford Sound is within Fjordland National Park, which is a very rainy spot, but you’re rewarded with waterfalls!)

North Island: If you want to see a bit more of New Zealand, you may decide to come early and spend a day or two in Wellington, or extend your layover in Auckland (New Zealand’s largest city at roughly one and a half million people) for a bit and checkout some of what the North Island has to offer.  If you’re a fan of the Lord of The Rings, you may want to visit “Middle Earth” (where much of the movies were filmed), located south of Auckland near Matamata.

Wine

You definitely don’t need to be a wine expert to enjoy this tour. In fact, you don’t even need any knowledge of wines at all. All you need is an open mind, an ability to discern what you like and don’t like, and an adventurous spirit.

Ability Level

This adventure is rated Moderate, mainly because we hike for three days on the Queen Charlotte Track.  If you are not used to hiking for three days in a row, you may find this taxing, even though we eliminate the most difficult day of this 71-kilometer track. Our remaining daily hikes and walks are easier and shorter and you can even opt out of them if you like.  We also have one day of biking on this trip and it requires some navigation.  However, the route is fairly flat and mostly on quiet country roads.

Flights

We’re not going to lie, the flights to New Zealand are long, ranging from 14 – 18 hours depending on where your starting airport is located, and expensive – but it’s absolutely worth it!

Limited Trail Options

We’ll be hiking point to point in order to cover as much ground as possible during our time in New Zealand. Because of this our the days on the QCT are NOT as flexible and we are not able to offer a range of route distances. On these days you will need to be prepared to do the full distance. However on one of the days, you may opt out of the hike by taking a boat ride (NZ $45) instead. Though you would miss the beautiful trail scenery, there is a lot to do at the Lodge where we’ll be checking into and you would otherwise not get a lot of time there.

Not So Vegetarian Friendly

We truly try to accommodate everyone’s meal preferences on every trip, but due to the location of this tour Vegetarians should take note that meals are meat heavy.

Who Would Enjoy This Tour

If you are fairly active and have always wanted to visit New Zealand, this is your opportunity. If you are into wine, the New Zealand wines will impress you, as will the focus on quality and sustainability in New Zealand’s food world. Finally, the stunning landscapes offer breathtaking moments for even the most jaded travelers!

Changes to Your Itinerary

While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience. If there is any one experience that is going to make or break your trip, please discuss this with us in advance! We will attempt to keep our website itinerary as current as possible and communicate any major changes with you in the weeks prior to the tour.
