Yellowstone is one of the most fantastic vacation destinations in the world - and yet we improve on this in two ways. First, we travel during the winter months when comparatively few people visit the Park. Second, we get off the beaten path, using snowshoes and cross country skis.
This is an unforgettable trip few others will ever experience. We spend two nights in the interior of Yellowstone at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge Cabins. Old Faithful’s geyser eruptions take place within sight of the hotel and its’ hot water creates massive clouds of steam during the winter eruptions. The lodge is perfectly situated within the park, allowing us to explore on skis at our own pace via various trail options. Since most of the Park's roads are closed in the winter, we access the snow lodge and many of our trails via snow coaches, vehicles with tank tracks to keep them on the snow’s surface. In addition to our time in the park, we start and end our trip with hotel stays in fun Gardiner, Montana and at the luxurious Chico Hot Springs Resort.
During the days, we'll explore the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem via cross-country ski, foot and snowshoe. There will be plenty of time to relax, soak in natural hot spring pools, and eat delicious meals in between our daily activities which are all optional and self-paced. Plus, our 2010 date starts on the night of the full moon, an awesome site over the snowcovered fields.
Accommodations
We start our trip by staying in Gardiner, a fun Montana town and one of the gateways to Yellowstone, at
the Absaroka Lodge.
Although the hotel is not luxurious, it is perfectly situated on the
banks of the Yellowstone River and within walking distance to
Gardiner's restaurants. Our second and third nights are
spent in Yellowstone
Old Faithful Snow Lodge Cabins. We spend our last night in Chico
Hot Springs Resort,
a wonderful 100-year old gem located right outside the
Park in Paradise Valley.
Snow Coach Transport and Ski & Snowshoe Rentals
Because
many roads are closed in Yellowstone in the winter, we travel by
snowcoach and this extra cost is not included in the tour price.
We will pay this $175 cost (two four-hour transfers into the park
and two transfers to our ski locations within the park) directly and
bill you for it directly. If you would like to rent cross country skis
and snow shoes, rather than bringing your own, we can arrange this for
$50 per person for the week.
Group Size Restrictions
Because
of limitations in our vans and snow coaches, this trip is initially
limited to 10 people. After that, we will create a waiting list
and, once we reach 14 participants, will add a second van and snow
coach.
