Three million people visit Yellowstone National Park each year because of its beauty, geothermal features, and wild animals. The vast majority of visitors visit Old Faithful and almost all of them arrive by vehicle.
We take a different approach. Starting in the very southwest corner of the park, we hike 33 miles over four days through some of the most remote wilderness in the United States to reach Old Faithful. We hike through various ecosystems including pine forests, remnants of the mammoth 1988 fires, marshes, and geothermal areas. We ford streams on foot, pick salmonberries and huckleberries along the way, stop to watch the eruption of Lone Star Geyser, and tell stories around the campfire at night.
Our tour has a few special features that make it unlikely you've ever done anything like it. First, we have the opportunity to soak in two separate geothermal hotsprings along the way - natural baths that help us keep clean on the trail. Second, we'll be supported by our friends Deb and Kevin Little at Dry Ridge Outfitters, who provide horses to carry our gear and cook for us each day. It is a true Western experience filled with the taste of biscuits cooked in a Dutch oven, the smell of hot coffee in the morning, and the jingle of a horse's bell at night. (Our wranglers can accommodate all food restrictions, too.)
Hiking mileage varies depending on which camp sites the forst service assigns us but averages 8-9 miles per day, mostly on flat ground with big few hills. Our trek finishes with an overnight stay at Old Faithful Inn where we'll toast our trip highlights with champagne and embellish our stories while watching Old Faithful erupt.
Accommodations
We spend the three nights of our trek in the backcountry,
sleeping in tents and cooking over the fire. Our wranglers Deb and
Kevin take care of all the cooking but we will be responsible for
pitching our own
tents (with help as needed). You can bring your own sleeping bag or
rent one for $75; we'll supply the tents. Our final night we
return to civilization and sleep in the Old
Faithful Inn, right next to Old Faithful itself. Built in
1904, this is the world's largest log structure and a perfect place to
end the tour.
