Our Quebec Skating Adventure offers a vast array of skating. We begin on an urban trail in Montreal, along the Lachine Canal our very first day. From there, we visit L'Estriade, a 21-kilometer trail that borders a national park and hosts Canada's largest outdoor museum, with its 29 monumental sculptures along the pathway.
Next we head north to skate for two days on the 200-kilometer long Le P'tit Train du Nord, a converted railroad route that winds through the forests and lakes of Quebec's northwoods. (Don't worry, we won't require you to skate the entire trail - only 94 kilometers are actually paved!)
We spend our final night in Montreal after skating along the historic Soulanges Canal (the first canal in North America to use locks and the forerunner of the St. Lawrence Seaway). Although only 30 minutes outside of Montreal, the rural scenery includes enchanting rolling green hills and an occasional Holstein watching you whiz by. Like all the other trails we use on this trip, this 34-kilometer trail is nearly flat.
We get the chance on our final morning to skate part of Montreal's "Grand Tour" from the Island of Montreal (did you know it was an island?) across the bridge to Canada's Grand Prix racetrack, which is open to inline skaters when it is not hosting Formula One race cars. How many laps can you do?
Although you'll be in Canada, you'll feel like you're across the Atlantic. Montreal has a very European flair and your ears will delight in the sounds of the French-speaking population (most of whom will be equally as happy to converse with you in English). The best part is that it is a much shorter plane ride to Montreal than it is to Paris! C'est fantastique!
Accommodations
We spend our first two nights at a brand new boutique hotel, St-Christophe,
in the town of Granby, east of Montreal. In addition to luxurious
accommodations, this hotel offers skate-in and skate-out access to our
trail! We then move to Villa
Bellerive,
a charming family run inn on Lac Nomingue in Quebec's Upper Laurentian
area, for the next two nights. Again, access to our trail -- Le
P'tit Train du Nord -- is right out our front door. Our
final night is in the heart of historic Old Montreal at the SpringHill Suites.
It doesn't get any better than this! We can walk or skate everywhere we
need to go from here.
