"Fantastico! Loved the first three days of hiking to not only enjoy the landscape but also to enjoy getting to know everyone on the trip! Perfect amount of kilometers offered per day and activity. The food, wine & special events were outstanding. Hotel choices great -- loved how each one was completely different. Guides couldn't have been more attentive and helpful! - 2011 tour participant

Our Italy Hike and Bike, Food & Wine Adventure takes place in two fantastic provinces: Tuscany and Umbria. We believe these are the two of the best provinces in Italy to visit. Here's why:

  • Incredible pastas, pizza, and bruschetta.
  • Beautiful scenery with rolling hills and waving wheat fields.
  • Hilltop medieval towns with winding streets and inviting shops.
  • Country paths and roads you share only with a few locals.
  • And oh - the vino! Brunello from Monalcino, Vino Nobile from Montepulciano, and Sagrantino from Montefalco.

But the real kicker to our tour is this: we are the only ones we know of who do a combination of walking in Tuscany and biking in Umbria. And this is by far the best way to see the area.

We start our tour with three days of hiking in Tuscany, the province made even more famous by the book and movie "Under the Tuscan Sun". The scenery is spectacular and the historic towns provide the perfect excuse to do a little shopping or sample the local delicacies. We have a chance to visit a pecorino, or sheep cheese farm, and we spend the night at an agriturismo - a farm that now houses guests. Tuscany is hilly, however, and many people find the biking too difficult. Instead, we hike on small farming roads along the tops of ridgetops, with beautiful views of the area's postcard scenery.

We then switch to Umbria and our bikes. Umbria is just as beautiful as Tuscany, although less well known. In addition, it boasts the Valle di Umbria, a flat valley that makes for a perfect complement to rolling Tuscany. The short routes during our biking days are generally flat with an occasional climb to a worthy hilltop town. The long bike routes head off to the valley's sides for more strenuous cycling. You choose the route but, either way, you'll be rewarded with incredible food and local wine. During our days in Umbria we tour a traditional olive oil mill, have an Umbrian wine tasting, and engage in a cooking class where you eat the fruits of your labors.

Hiking in Tuscany and biking in Umbria provides us with the best of the area and the most suitable activity for each province. We don't know why more people don't do it this way.

Accommodations
We stay in four fantastic towns, two in Tuscany and two in Umbria:

  • Nights One & Two: Piccolo Hotel la Valle, Pienza: a new hill perched on the edge of Pienza with an incredible view of the valley below
  • Night Three: Fattoria Pieve a Salti, one of our favorite hotels in the area, is an agriturismo with outstanding views, fresh food products used in the meals, and friendly staff
  • Nights Four & Five: Palazzo Bocci, a four-star hotel in a 17th century "palace" located in the middle of the medieval hillside town of Spello
  • Night Six: Hotel San Luca, one of the nicest hotels in the hip city of Spoleto
