Alaska! The name brings to mind huge mountains, wild open spaces, and bountiful wildlife. It is a land full of potential adventure. But who would think of Alaska as a potential inline skate (Rollerblade) tour destination?
Surprisingly, the areas of Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula south of the city have a network of paved bicycle trails and we make use of this to create a fantastic five-day inline skate tour. The paths wind through the city of Anchorage, along the coastline, and under the impressive coastal mountains, giving us an excellent view of the state from our Rollerblades. We even plan a night skate under the midnight sun, since we are there at almost the peak of the summer sun.
But it is equally our off-skate time that so impresses in Alaska. We jump on a boat to take a wildlife viewing cruise in Resurrection Bay out of Seward, view Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park, and take a few short hikes into the backcountry.
Please note prices in Alaska are high and we have to charge more for this tour than our average domestic skate tour. However, it is a unique tour experience well worth every penny!
Accommodations
The hotels we use in Alaska are excellent. We spend our first night in
the Seward
Windsong Lodge,
a beautiful hotel nestled near the Resurrection River on the road to
Exit Glacier. We then spend two nights at the Alyeska Resort,
Anchorage's premier ski resort and within skating distance from the
trail. Our final night we spend in Anchorage at the Voyager Hotel,
which although recently purchased by a hotel chain is a very good
property located in a perfect area of town right near the trails.
