bike tours in California wine country

Sonoma & Napa Biking Adventure Itinerary

Day One: You can fly to San Francisco Airport this morning and we'll pick you up there, or we'll meet you in the town of Sonoma. We have a quick introductory session, get acquainted with our bikes (for those renting), and are immediately off on our first ride through wine country. Like most days, we'll have three options today with options to visit the nearby wineries of Buena Vista and Bartholomew Park or to take a longer ride out to the town of Glen Ellen and up into the hills of Jack London State Park. Dinner this evening is within walking distance of our hotel, located right off Sonoma's main plaza. Route options: 9, 18, and 24 miles.

Day Two: Our routes today take us from Sonoma through the Carneros Wine Region and across the county line into Napa. Most of the route is rural and flat, with one significant hill. You will have the option to stop at a number of wineries, including Monticello Vineyards and Clos du Val, and our van will pick up any purchases you make along the way. Tonight we stay in an excellent hotel in Yountville and walk down the street to dinner at a high-end wine country restaurant. Route options: 22, 32, and 53 miles.

Day Three: Our main route goes right up the heart of the Napa Valley, from Yountville through famous St. Helena to Calistoga. We avoid the busy main road and stay on the Silverado Trail and other smaller side roads. There are dozens of wineries along our route but we suggest visits to Clos Pegase and Sterling Vineyards. If you are itching for more mileage, the long route is a scenic ride up into the Pope Valley, one of the best long rides in the area. Route options: 15, 25, and 49 miles.

Day Four:
Today we cross back from Napa County into Sonoma County, heading from Calistoga on Franz Valley Road to our small rural inn in Geyserville, right in the middle of the vines. This day gives us the second uphill of the tour, as we cross up and over the hills that separate the two counties. (Don't worry, the road is managable for everyone.) We reward your efforts with a tour, tasting, and picnic lunch at Alexander Valley Vineyards and then point out a number of great winery stops on your way to Geyserville. This evening, we stay in town and walk to a fantastic Italian restaurant just down the street. Route options: 19, 30, and 44 miles.

Day Five:
We save one of our most scenic rides for the last morning. Dry Creek is renowned for its wines but we love it just as much for the beauty of West Dry Creek Road, off the beaten path and perfect for cycling. After we return to the hotel, we shower, check out, and head back to the airport for our flights home. Route options: 8 and 16 miles.
