South Africa Frequently Asked Questions

We will send you detailed information about the Adventure in a Pre-Departure Packet once you register.

What is the weather going to be like?
South Africa is a big country with many separate climates. While temperatures don't vary that much, the key is to avoid the rainy seasons, which fall in April through September in the wine area and November through March in Kruger National Park. That leaves us with October as the single best month to travel for our split-location tour. High temperates will be in the 70s Fahrenheit with lows around 50 degrees.

What is the best way to get to the Tour and where do we meet?
We meet in Cape Town and will provide you with transportation from the airport to our hotel. Most people choose to arrive one day early to adapt and we'll give you info on how to book a hotel and what to do. We depart from Johannesburg. All flights from the US to South Africa are overnight flights and most connect through Europe or make a fuel stop in Senegal. We will provide more information on transportation in the Pre-Departure Packet.

What should I do if I want to extend my vacation in the area?
It is actually quite possible to rent a car in Cape Town and visit outlying areas, such as the Garden Coast, on your own. Alternatively, you might consider booking a second safari in another area of South Africa or in nearby Namibia or Botswana, as each region has distinct flora and fauna. Our local travel agent can help you.

Do I need to be a wine expert to enjoy this tour?
You definitely don't need to be a wine expert to enjoy this tour. In fact, you don't even need any knowledge of wines at all. All you need is an open mind, an ability to discern what you like and don't like, and an adventurous spirit.

What ability level do I really need to be for this tour?
The South Africa Hiking Wine Adventure is rated for All Abilities. The bush walks near Kruger National Park are all flat, relatively easy, and optional. In Cape Town and the wine country, we will have multiple hiking options for you to choose. You need have no advance experience or fitness to enjoy this tour.

For what type of people would you recommend this trip?
If you've wanted to go on safari, and you should, this is your opportunity. If you are into wine, the South African wines will impress you, not just for the flavor but for the professionalism of the entire industry. Finally, if you are interested in history, international politics, or human rights, South Africa has a lot to teach.
