Bicycles in Provence

Provence Biking Frequently Asked Questions

We will send you detailed information about the Adventure in a Pre-Departure Packet once you register.

What is the weather going to be like?
The average high temperature in our tour area in during the second half of April is a beautiful 70 degrees, while overnight lows are in the upper 40s. It can rain year round in Provence but only rains on average about six days per month in April. So, expect mostly clear and warm days and cool evenings - but be prepared for a chance of rain.

Which time of the year is best to go there?
Weatherwise, any time between mid-April and the end of October is usually nice in Provence. We like the shoulder seasons of late spring and early fall because there are fewer tourists.

What is the best way to get to there and where do we meet?
We meet in the town of Avignon. Avignon does have an airport with limited direct flights from Southampton in the UK but this is only convenient if you are flying from the UK and the flight schedules matches your travel dates. However, the train connections to Avignon are excellent and you can choose to fly into Paris (3:20 hours by train), Geneva (3:00 by train), or the smaller regional airports of Lyon (1.5 hours) or Marseille (one hour).

What should I do if I want to extend my vacation in the area?
It is certainly worth extending your tour by a few days to stay over in your gateway airports. You might even consider doing an "open jaw" ticket in which you fly into Paris and out of Marseille, for example. If you wish to explore the area more thoroughly, we suggest renting a car in Avignon after the tour. There are many other parts of Provence you can explore on your own or, alternatively, you can drive back to Paris and spend time in Burgundy on the way. Driving in Europe is not as hard as you might think!

What ability level do I really need to be for this tour?
This Adventure is rated For All Abilities. There are hills on our routes but Provence is not exceptionally hilly and you always have the support van available!

For what type of people would you recommend this trip?
France is the ideal biking country and we recommend this tour for bikers of all types, from casual bikers who ride only for fun to those who like to put 50 miles in on a weekend. If you are not regularly a biker, this is also a perfect place to start.
