Patagonia Frequently Asked Questions
We will send you detailed information about the Adventure in a
Pre-Departure Packet once you register.
What is the weather going to be like in Patagonia?
The average high temperature in Patagonia in December is in the upper
50s, so the weather will be cool but not cold during the days. Perfect
for hiking. Nights drop down only into the lower 40s, so it usually
doesn't get below freezing. Winds can be strong and rainfall, while low
all year long, can happen at any time.
What is the best way to get to the tour and where do we meet?
You are responsible for getting to and from Santiago, Chile and this
transportation is not included in the trip price. Flights from the US
to Santiago are usually around $900 to $1,200. The Pre-Departure Packet
you will receive upon registration will include arrival and departure
information, including suggestions for making your travel
arrangements. Flights from North America are usually
overnight flights arriving in the morning and our local staff will meet
you at the airport. We will purchase your Santiago to Punta Arenas
airplane ticket and include it on your invoice. The ticket is usually
around $675.
How high do we trek and will I be able to deal with the
altitude?
We are always at a moderate altitude. The highest point in
Patagonia is less than 10,000 feet and our trekking takes place several
thousand feet lower than that. You won't have issues with altitude.
What should I do if I want to extend my vacation in
the area?
Perhaps the easiest extension would be to simply stay in Santiago after
the tour is over. You can easily rent a car and drive to the coast or
the wine areas, both only several hours from the capital. You might
also consider flying from Santiago to nearby Mendoza, a fantastic city
and featured on our Chile & Argentina Multisport Wine Adventure.
Do I need a passport and visa?
You must have a passport valid for at least six months to enter Chile.
North Americans and most Europeans automatically receive a visa upon
entering the country. However, citizens of the United States are
required to pay a $100 "reciprocity fee", equivalent to the fee charged
Chileans for a US visa.
Do I need to get immunizations?
No immunizations are required for entry to Chile and we will not be in
an area of high risk. However, you should still consult with a travel
doctor about what immunizations you should have. Recommended
shots might include:
What ability level do I really need to be for this
Adventure?
This Adventure is rated as Moderate
and it is certainly easier than both our Peru and Tibet treks, due to
the lower altitude. Anyone in reasonable fitness should be able to
complete the trek. Having said that, you will enjoy the trek much, much
more if you prepare for it in advance.
What is included in the trip price?
Included in the trip price is double-occupancy lodging, all meals
starting with dinner on the first day and ending with breakfast on the
final day, local transportation, one Zephyr and two local guides, and a
Zephyr Adventures souvenir. Not included is transportation to Santiago,
the reciprocity fee ($100 for US citizens), tips for your local guides,
personal expenditures, drinks, and an internal flight of approximately
$675 that will be billed to you by Zephyr Adventures.
For what type of people would you recommend this
Adventure?
This Adventure is for those people who have the desire to get out and
hike in an incredible area of the world but would rather have a bed and
hot shower at the end of the day. It is an amazing land that few people
have the chance to experience.
