Netherlands Frequently Asked Questions

inline skating in Netherlands We will send you detailed information about the Adventure in a Pre-Departure Packet once you register.

What is the weather going to be like?
The high temperature in The Netherlands when we visti us usally in the upper 60s with a low in the lower 50s. The Netherlands is a coastal country with a maritime climate. On any one trip, we average four days of sun, two days of clouds, and one or two days of rain. Because the temperatures are mild and the rain generally comes and goes quickly, the weather is actually often excellent for skating. On some Adventures we have experienced much higher temperatures (in the 80s), so you should be prepared for anything.

Which time of the year is best to go there?
As a temperate climate, The Netherlands can be cold from October through April. May, June, and September are also variable leaving July and August as the two best months to travel. In northern Friesland, our tour location, it never gets too crowded so staying away from high season is not an issue.

What is the best way to get to there and where do we meet?
Amsterdam is a major European hub and we meet you in the city on the first day of the tour. If you arrive the morning of the tour we will pick you up from the airport.  If you arrive earlier, we will recommend hotels for you.

What should I do if I want to extend my vacation in the area?
Amsterdam. This is the single most exciting city in The Netherlands and one of the most exciting in Europe. It is easy to walk (or skate) to all major tourist areas, the people are friendly, and there is lots to do. There are several major museums (the Van Gogh being one) and, naturally, you should visit the Red Light District for the experience. The topper (for skaters) is the Friday Night Skate which you can join both before and after the tour.

What ability level do I really need to be for this tour?
This Adventure is rated for Advanced Beginner and better skaters. The skating in The Netherlands is flat; the only hills are those going up or down the dikes and you can see for miles standing on a chair! The only difficulty are the "cobblestones" (actually bricks) in many towns; with some practice you will have little problem. In general, the pavement is smooth although on a seven-day tour with hundreds of kilometers of skating, there is always variability.

For what type of people would you recommend this trip?
This is our first-ever Barge tour so if you are interested in boats, this is a great tour. If you have traveled with us to The Netherlands before, this is also a good choice because of the new routes. Finally, if you are an inline skater who wants to experience a European skate tour, the Netherlands is our flagship location!
